SAVE THE ICE HOUSE !

AN ICY DILEMMA...

By Marie Newman

In the past few months news of the impending demolition of the Ice House have been on television as well as the subject of numerous articles and editorials in the Wilmington Star-News newspaper.  The Ice House, located on the corner of Water Street and Muters Lane is believed to have been built around 1838.

Unless they can find a buyer, the current owners, Dawn Lamb and Karl Tutt plan to demolish the building and build a $10 million project on the site consisting of multi-story condominiums, a restaurant and retail space.  In May the county condemned the building and ordered the owners to fix it or demolish it.  Jim Quinn, City Councilman and developer of the property, estimated it would cost $150,000 to make the building structurally sound.  Creative Properties has it listed for $1,050,00.00 with a development potential of 40,000 square feet.
