John walked out onto the balcony and took a deep breath of fresh air. While he loved the Ancient city, this was his favorite place of all. Hearing the doors open and someone come out to join him, he didn’t even turn around. He knew it was Elizabeth. He always knew when she was around.

“That view never gets old.” She said, joining him at the railing.

“No it doesn’t. I could live out here.”

Elizabeth smiled then her look turned to one of panic as an alarm suddenly started sounding. She headed for the doors and tapped her earpiece. “What’s going on?”

She stopped when the doors did not open and nobody answered her. “Hello?”

John placed his hand on the door and closed his eyes, trying to use his gene. Nothing happened. “What the hell is going on!
”Something just put the city into lockdown. My earpiece is out. Is yours?”

He looked away, sheepish. “I left it in my room.”

Elizabeth sighed and sat down. “Then I guess we’re stuck here for a while.”

John nodded at sat down next to her. They didn’t speak but John noticed Elizabeth reach into her pocket and pull something out. It was an iPod.

“Where did you get that?”

She grinned. “It came in on the Daedalus. I ordered it. Why?”

He looked at it, feeling very jealous. “That’s the latest! I have wanted one of those for so long. You’re lucky!”

She grinned again and handed him one of the earphones. “What do you want to hear?”

Two hours later they were still out there quietly listening to some classical music. John turned to her. “Why me?”

She looked at him, confused. “Pardon?”

“Why did you choose me for this expedition? Why have you kept me around?”

She looked at him.  John I chose you because I knew you could do the job.”

“But why have you kept me around? I’ve screwed up so many times!”

“I have kept you around because you have added so much to this expedition! If it wasn’t for you almost everyone here would be dead!” She looked away. “Besides, you have become important to many members of this expedition.”

He stared at her for a moment then looked away. “Many?”

“Yes. There are some here who could not imagine being here without you.”

He leaned closer to her. “Name one.”

She looked at him and he could tell she knew he knew what she was avoiding saying. She looked down for a moment then back at him. “Me.” She softly replied.

He stared at her, not wanting to break eye contact. He was debating furiously with himself. He knew what she had just admitted had taken a lot. She was a very private woman.

“I can’t imagine being here without you.” He told her.

She nodded slightly and still didn’t break eye contact. She quickly licked then bit her lip. His eyes moved to her mouth and he found he suddenly had the intense desire to kiss her. He hesitated, knowing that their relationship had just changed drastically with what they had both admitted. If they kissed, it could never go back to what it had been. But he did not want it to go back. He had realized that he had developed more-than-friend feelings for her long ago. Taking a deep breath, he slowly leaned in, moving slow enough to let her move away if she wanted. She didn’t

He felt his mouth connect with her soft lips and closed his eyes, wanting to lose himself in the feeling. He applied only slight pressure and felt her return the kiss with surprising eagerness. Feeling her open her mouth against his he captured her lower lip. She made a small sound and moved her arms around his neck, pulling him closer against her. He moved his hand to the back of her neck and up through her hair. He almost moaned at the feeling of the soft curls between his fingers. He moved his tongue against her lips, demanding entrance. She immediately obliged and he invaded her mouth, finding the taste of Strawberries. He almost smiled; he had always loved Strawberries.

Finding the need for air was more powerful than the need for her, he reluctantly broke the kiss. They sat there, foreheads together, breathing hard.

Elizabeth cleared her throat. “Wow.”

John let out a quick laugh. “Yeah. Wow.”

She looked up at him and smiled shyly. “John I-“ She broke off and held her earpiece. Looking back at him she smiled. “It seems things are fixed.”

He nodded and got up. Holding out his hand, he helped her get up. “Ready?”

She nodded and led them into the city.

Once in the control room his mouth dropped.

“SURPRISE! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” Almost everybody in the city yelled.

John looked around at everyone, all the people who cared about him, feeling…happy? Grateful? Stunned? He couldn’t decide. “Wow. I wasn’t…this is great!” He turned to Elizabeth and saw her grinning widely. As everyone broke apart, going to mingle, he walked over to her.

“Lockdown?” He asked.

“Well we had to have a way to keep you away.” She smirked and handed him the iPod. “Happy Birthday John.”

He took it and smirked. “So it was mine all along. You’re an evil woman Elizabeth Weir. By the way, how did you know it was my birthday? It’s not listed in my file.”

She merely smirked and gave him a quick kiss. “Mums the word John.”
