THE FAILURE OF AMERICAN PRISONS

80% of all crimes are committed by recidivist criminals, or, REPEAT OFFENDERS

According to recent evidence, the majority of current U.S. prison systems transform various inmates convicted of violent crimes into better criminals, and do not adequately serve their stated purposes.
Veiw the evidence

Today’s prisons provide the most dangerous of all criminals, criminals convicted of violent crimes, with a place to become better criminals. They spend there time becoming bigger and stronger through weightlifting, devising victim ambushes and police counter-attacks, and learning criminal tactics from each other. Inmates come out of prison bigger, stronger, faster, and more intimidating than when they entered. Prison surveillance videos have exposed inmates devising victim ambushes and police counter-attacks amongst each other. What do you think they do with the rest of their time? They socialize, telling stories, sharing past experiences, and trading tricks of the trade.

Nationwide studies concur that within three years of sentencing, approximately two-thirds of offenders have been rearrested for a new felony, half of these recidivist crimes were violent. The recidivism rate in America is astonishing- eighty-percent of all crimes committed are committed by repeaters. The prison system is not working (for the better) for these repeat offenders. In fact, some might say that a prison sentence is more like a vacation than a punishment, afterall, you don’t have to go to work everyday, you get free shelter, free cable, free time, and much more.

We need to reform our prisons to protect our community.

“The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.” –Edmund Burke
The four principal goals of American prisons are retribution, incapacitation, deterrence, and reformation. There is proof that these goals are accomplished at an inefective rate.more...
