Trinity Theurge

In the winter of 473, during the 10th Age of Migdalia, the Crimson Eagles adventuring party learned of a terrible entity which was destined to descend upon Althea, eventually destroying the entire Plane. Working against impossible odds, the Eagles met the entity known as Brahms as he appeared in Althea, and engaged the planeswalker in battle. During the fight, two powerful artifacts were destroyed; the Shield of Branddalla, which Brahms shattered with his unbelievable powerful magic, and the Annulus, which the psion Rhian used to eradicate the planar invader. However, in his last moments, Brahms manifested a power of such potency that it altered the very fabric of reality.

Every psion in Migdalia felt the change instantly; it was as if a previously locked door had been violently thrust open within their minds. Some felt their power increase exponentially, while others received terrible, blinding headaches or lost their memories completely. Each one, however, felt an irresistible pull towards the site where Brahms died, though none understood the compulsion. The first psions who arrived gained incredible powers, though many were driven insane as well. One psion in particular, a wild talent named Saraa Britestone, was also a cleric of Selasarae, and had studied wizardry alongside her clerical teachings. After arriving at the site, which the psions had dubbed the ‘Well of Knowledge,’ Saraa collapsed, passing into a hallucinatory coma for three days. When she awoke, Saraa possessed powers which seemed to defy the traditionally accepted limits of magic and psionics. She had become the first Trinity Theurge.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the Trinity Theurge prestige class.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A trinity theurge gains no new weapon or armor proficiency.

Spellcasting/Psionics: A trinity theurge continues blends arcane magic, divine magic, and psionics into a functional whole, and thus, advances in all three. Each level, the character gains new spells per day and spells known as if she had also gained a level in one arcane spellcasting class she belonged to prior to adding this prestige class and in one divine spellcasting class she belonged to prior to adding this prestige class. She gains additional power points per day and access to new powers as if she had also gained a level in any one manifesting class she belonged to prior to adding this prestige class. She does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that level would have gained (bonus metamagic or metapsionic feats, improved turning capabilities, etc).

Trinity Companion (Ex): A trinity theurge’s familiar and psicrystal fuse together, creating a hybrid creatures with the powers of both. The theurge’s psicrystal fuses to the familiar’s body (typically on its forehead), granting the familiar the slippery mind ability of a rogue, as well as a +2 racial bonus on saving throws against psionic effects. The two creatures, psicrystal and familiar, are forevermore treated as if they were a single creature, called a trinity companion, which uses the familiar’s base statistics except as noted here.

The trinity companion gains the abilities of both a familiar and a psicrystal. Add the theurge’s class level to her class level of whichever class granted her the familiar to determine the companion’s familiar abilities, and add her class level to her manifester class to determine her psicrystal abilities. All applicable bonuses and abilities from these two sources stack. In addition, the trinity companion gains any applicable granted powers from domains the theurge has access to. Note that some granted powers (especially those which enhance spellcasting or grant metamagic feats) may not be useful to the companion.

Trinity theurges lacking either a familiar or a psicrystal gain no benefit from this ability: even if they possess one, it does not advance unless it fuses with the other. If the theurge at any time possesses both a psicrystal and a familiar, they fuse immediately, and gain the appropriate abilities. Should a companion die, the theurge suffers the same penalties as if both her familiar and her psicrystal had perished.

Ectoplasmic Substitution (Su): Beginning at 2nd level, the trinity theurge’s merger of magic and psionics improves, allowing her to create ectoplasmic versions of material components and focuses to power her spells. When casting any spell, she may create these duplicate components as a free action by expending an appropriate amount of power points. This amount is equal to one power point, plus one power point per 100 gp in the component or focus’s market value.

Psionic Reinforcement (Su): The ambient power of a trinity theurge’s psyche now serves to amplify her magical abilities. When she reaches 3rd level, she gains the ability to expend her psionic focus as she casts a spell. By doing so, she may increase the DC of any save the spell allows by +1.

When the trinity theurge reaches 6th level, this bonus increases to +2. At 9th level, it increases again, to +3.

Compensation (Su): At 4th level, the trinity theurge is able to blend the powers she wields together, enhancing one at the expense of the others. Whenever she casts a spell or manifests a power using a metamagic or metapsionic feat that would normally increase the level of the spell slot occupied or the power point cost of the effect, she may instead meet that cost with an alternate form of energy. For every 3 power points spent on a spell enhanced with a metamagic feat, the theurge may offset the level increase of the spell by one. Likewise, for every spell slot spent on a power enhanced with a metapsionic feat, she may reduce the additional power point cost by 2.

This ability may not be used in conjunction with Psi-Spell feats, nor can it reduce the level or power point cost below the amount normally needed for the effect.

Trinity Soul (Su): By 5th level, the trinity theurge has learned enough of the similarities between arcane magic, divine magic, and psionics to bend her abilities in favor of one or the other temporarily. As a full-round action that provokes attacks of opportunity, she may focus her abilities towards either arcane magic, divine magic, or psionics. Thereafter, she adds all her trinity theurge levels to either her arcane spellcasting class, divine spellcasting class, or psionic class for the purposes of determining caster or manifester level, as applicable. This ability does not change the number of spells the theurge can cast or her power point pool.

Trinity Tap (Su): The trinity theurge gains access to this potent ability at 7th level, allowing her to deliver dual touch spells with telekinetic force. The trinity theurge gains the concussion blast power if she does not already possess it. She may use this ability as many times as she desires, though doing so burns through her power points and spells quickly.

As a standard action, the theurge may manifest her concussion blast power while casting an arcane touch spell and a divine touch spell. These additional spells are essentially cast at the same time the theurge manifests the concussion blast power, though this ability still requires only a single standard action. The concussion blast has its normal effects upon the targeted creature, in addition to delivering the other two touch spells. Should the target possess spell or power resistance, the theurge must first overcome the creature’s power resistance (if any) to affect it with the concussion blast power, and must then overcome the creature’s spell resistance (if any) for each touch spell (assuming the touch spells are affected by spell resistance).

Should the touch spells allow multiple touch attacks with a single casting (such as chill touch), the theurge may manifest concussion blast on her next turn and continue her attack. If one of the touch spells lasts for multiple touch attacks and the other does not, she may cast a new spell to replace the expired spell when she activates this power. If the theurge chooses not to use this ability, any additional touch attacks remaining from spells cast in conjunction with this ability are lost.

In order to use this ability, the trinity theurge must manifest concussion blast while casting an arcane touch spell and a divine touch spell. Should she fail to meet this criteria (arcane magic does not function in the area, for example), the ability fails to activate, and the theurge loses any spent power points and spells.

Unified Theories (Ex): At 8th level, the trinity theurge unravels the secrets of metamagic and metapsionic feats, reducing them to their core principles. If she possesses a metamagic feat, she is assumed to also possess the corresponding metapsionic feat, and visa versa. Thus, if she possesses the Heighten Power feat, she is also assumed to possess the Heighten Spell feat. Should she somehow lose access to the Heighten Power feat, she would also lose access to the Heighten Spell feat. This ability applies to metamagic and metapsionic feats the theurge possesses when she gains this ability, as well as to any metamagic or metapsionic feats she may gain at a later time.

Phase Shift (Su): By 10th level, the trinity theurge has gained insight into the natures of divine magic, arcane magic, and psionics, and can nullify their use. As a full-round action that provokes attacks of opportunity, the trinity theurge may choose to suppress either arcane magic, divine magic, or psionics in a 100 foot radius around him. The effect is similar to an antimagic field which only affects the chosen type of magic or psionics.

While suppressed, magical or psionic items or effects created from the suppressed type cease to function, while those created from the remaining two function normally. Spells or powers of the chosen type manifested or cast within the area cease to function, as do effects brought within the area.

This ability lasts a number of rounds equal to the theurge’s class level, but may be renewed again if the theurge expends another full-round action to reactivate the ability. The theurge may dismiss an active phase shift as a free action.
