This page is demonstrate why a jpg image isnt the best file extension to use when making buttons JPG

You see that the areas beyond the rounded corners show as white. While this is fine on a white background, if the button is to be used on a color background, you would need to incorperate transparency that is only available by using file extensions other than JPG such as gif files

GIF animation:

You see in this sample that there is no unsightly white corners beyond the rounded edges.
