Othila is the essence of the cosmic idea of Midgard - the enclosure in the middle. Its mystery is symbolized by the stronghold enclosure of the clan, which defines its holy boundary and serves to defend it against the unholy intruders.
This Rune is also a symbol of inborn qualities that are inherited from clan or tribe of one's ancestors. This is essentially spiritual in origin and ultimately comes from the divine ancestry and the ancestor's past actions. Othila is the mystery of the fylgja as a source of spiritual magickal power, which results from the virtuous deeds of past generations as runic imprints onto the DNA of the descendents - a powerful Rune of Odin. The stave form is a monogram of Odin.
Othila is symbolic of that which is inherited by the entire clan in both the mundane and spiritual realms. It is as immovable as the land and can't be passed out of the tribe or clan. However, through the institution of marriage those who are outside of the clan can tap into its power by integrating with it.
This Rune is the wise and just management of the land by the noble ones: those who have the spiritual power of this Rune in accordance with tribal tradition and law.
This is the Rune of material prosperity and well-being. It works together with the complementary idea of mobile property - power contained in Fehu to develop and maintain this important quality in the multiverse. Othila is the Rune that gives us liberty in a secure and lawful society, integrated with itself and with its environment. It is preserved clanic and tribal law on a spiritual level. In Asatru the kindred express this Rune.

Stödhur (Positions):
I. Stand with your legs spread wide, as in the Gebo stadha, and your arms over your head with your fingertips touching and elbows bent. This is effective in operations to bring the will of he magician into manifestation.
II. Stand with your legs as above, but with you arms in front of your torso so that your fingertips are touching and elbows bent so that your hands rest just above your genitals. This stadha is most effective in works of inspirational intent.

Oracular Interpretation:
This is a time of separating paths. Old skins must be shed, outmoded relationships discarded. When you receive this Rune, a peeling away is called for. Part of the Cycle of Initiation, Othila is a Rune of radical severance.
The appropriate action here is submission and, quite possibly, retreat - knowing how and when to retreat and possessing the firmness of will to carry it out.
Real property is associated with Othila, for it is the Rune of acquisition and benefit. However, the benefits you receive - the Inheritance - may be derived from something you must give up. This can be particularly demanding when what you are called upon to abandon is some aspect of your behavior, a part of your cultural inheritance. For then you must look closely at what, until now, you have proudly claimed as you birthright. Whether it is your attachment to your position in society, to the work you do, or even to your beliefs about your own nature, the separation called for will free you to become more truly who you are.

This is not a time to be bound by old conditioning, old authority. Consider not only what will benefit you but also what will benefit others, and act according to the light you possess now in your life. Because you may be called upon to undertake a radical departure from old ways, total honesty is required. Otherwise, through negligence or refusal to see clearly, you may cause pain to others and damage to yourself.
Adaptability and skillful means are the methods to cultivate at this time. And still you must wait for the universe to act. Receiving this Rune, remember: We do without doing and everything gets done.
