The Mysterious Tarot

The history of the Tarot is wrapped in at least as much mystery as the Tarot itself. No one knows the true origin of the cards. We do know that the word Tarot is the word the French used for the original Italian word Tarocchi. Many believe the Tarot holds a secret code to life -- from the beginning of life's journey and on. There is speculation that the Tarot originated in Atlantis. This is a theory I lean towards strongly. I read yet another theory that suggested the origin of the Tarot may be found in the constellations which, as I see it, could be considered in line with the Atlantian connection. You will find the history of Tarot documented in many books. You will also find that the theories and opinions vary.

There is a great deal of Tarot history documented from 14th/15th century Italy. Italy gave us the Visconti Tarocchi which was commissioned in 1441 by the Duke of Milan, Filippo Maria Visconti. The Visconti-Sforza Tarocchi was created in 1450 as a wedding gift for a marriage between the Visconti and Sforza families. Both of these decks are said to have been used to play a game called Tarocchi. The artist commissioned to create these two decks was Bonifacio Bembo. However, these are certainly not the only Tarot decks of Italian origin.

The Tarot is made up of a combination of astrology, numerology, Kabbalah and more. Even the colors on the cards are symbolic, as are the animals, insects, birds, plants and the facial expressions of the characters. The direction a character is facing in relation to the other cards in a spread can be significant as well. It has been said that there are esoteric messages built into the cards of the Major Arcana -- secret information hidden in the cards by some ancient culture to ensure preservation of this most important knowledge. Sharing these secrets of wisdom openly, at some points in time could have lead to persecution, or worse.

There are literally hundreds of Tarot decks to choose from based on myriad themes, the most popular of which is the Rider-Waite Tarot. Many other decks are based on this one. I read with The Tarot of the Old Path. Some of the others that are available are The Wonderland Deck with an Alice in Wonderland theme, Tarot of Oz, Angel Tarot, Goddess Tarot, Motherpeace Round Tarot, Medicine Woman Tarot, Native American Tarot, Tarot Art Nouveau, Herbal Tarot which can be helpful in health readings, Robin Wood Tarot, Morgan-Greer Tarot, Arthurian Tarot, Celtic Tarot, Dali Tarot featuring the artwork of Salvador Dali, Tarot of Marseilles dating back to the 16th century, The Tiny Tarot with the cards measuring about 1" by 1/2", and then there is The Smallest Tarot of the World which consists only of the 22 Major Arcana cards of Tarot of the Gnomes -- these tiny cards can be almost entirely covered by a penny! Still other Tarot decks are based on various cultures, traditions, stories, fairies, dragons, crystals, et cetera. You can even get a blank deck if you choose to design your own Tarot. I believe that the knowledge of the Tarot and its popularity would not be what it is in Western Society today had it not been for The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a Western Kabbalistic tradition founded in 1888. From the Golden Dawn came the most widely used Tarot deck we have today. It is the Rider-Waite Tarot, also called the Rider Tarot, as William Rider was its publisher. However, this deck was actually created in 1908 by Arthur Edward Waite (1857-1942) and Pamela Coleman-Smith (1878-1951), both members of The Golden Dawn. Smith was the artist, so it only stands to reason that she must have had influence over the work. It seems it would have been more appropriate that this deck had been called the Waite-Smith Tarot -- but that is just my humble opinion!

The Tarot deck is made up of seventy-eight cards. Twenty-two of these cards make up the Major Arcana, beginning with 0 The Fool/Seeker and ending with XXI The World/Universe -- these usually represent major life principles, changes and/or occurrences. The word "arcana" is plural of the Latin arcanus, meaning secret.

The remaining fifty-six cards are the Minor Arcana. The Minor Arcana is made up of four suits of fourteen cards in each suit. Each suit consists of Ace through 10 plus four court cards -- Page, Knight, Queen and King. The Minor Arcana represent common events, actions, situations, thoughts/feelings, advice, et cetera. The court cards can be representative of people, but this is not always the case. Often it is the qualities of the personality portrayed by a particular court card that should be focused on instead of assuming that the card is indicative of another individual -- though at times a court card does represent a particular individual. The four suits are Cups/Cauldrons, Wands/Rods, Coins/Pentacles and Swords each of which represents one of the four elements: Water, Fire, Earth and Air respectively.

The fifty-six cards of the Minor Arcana are akin to those of our modern playing cards, with the exception of the court cards. In the Tarot, the court in each of the four suits consists of the Page, Knight, Queen and King (or in some decks Prince, Princess, Queen, Knight). In playing cards the Page and Knight have been combined to become the Jack. The suits of playing cards as they relate to the suits of the Tarot are as follows: Hearts = Cups, Clubs = Wands, Diamonds = Pentacles, Spades = Swords. It is also interesting to note that the Joker in playing cards is somewhat like The Fool/Seeker of the Major Arcana. It would be hard to dispute the theory that our modern playing cards are in fact a spin-off of the Tarot. There are some who can do readings with a regular deck of playing cards. I have seen this done and it is truly amazing to me.

I find the Tarot truly fascinating! I am so blessed to have made the choice to allow its magickal mystery tour into my life. In addition to enjoying the beautiful art of my favorite decks and the knowledge I have gained through working with my cards, through and because of the Tarot I have had the great fortune of meeting many marvelous people that I may not have met otherwise. Some of these lovely people are ones I have read for. Others are fellow Tarotists who have read for me, taught me and encouraged me in many ways. The Tarot is most definitely a life-enriching tool in more ways than one might first imagine.

My Favorite Tarot Deck

The Tarot of The Old Path is my absolute favorite Tarot deck. There are many decks I like and some I love, but this one is simply grand! If you decide to purchase this deck for yourself, I highly recommend getting the boxed set -- it includes the deck and book encased in a very nice and sturdy box. Where ever you obtain your Tarot deck from, and which ever deck you choose, just make sure it feels right to you. The Tarot Handbook by Angeles Arrien is a marvelous book chocked full of very helpful and enlightening information. This book really expands on the numerology part of the Tarot. The only thing I dislike about it is that it is based on Alester Crowley's Toth Tarot. Truly, there is not a thing I can see wrong with the Toth Deck, save for my personal preference for having people on my cards. However, I am not a fan of Crowley, to say the very least. I do not discount that some of his work, especially his earlier work, holds great value. Far be it from me to "throw the baby out with the bath water". I am very glad that I did not pass this book up simply because the author used Crowley's deck in its illustration. This is a workbook and in my opinion, is designed for personal growth. Reiki

The best way to translate the Japanese word Reiki, (ray-key), is "universal life force energy". It is a 5,000 year old natural healing technique used to heal and relax body, mind and spirit, down to the deepest level. The energy of Reiki is "channeled" energy. The Reiki practitioner is simply a channel, or vessel for this energy of The Light. For this reason the practitioner benefits from the energy as they channel it. Reiki can be performed by a laying-on of hands method or can be projected over distance. It is not a religion. In addition, it is not a substitute for traditional medicine. It does however, work very well in conjunction with traditional medicine and therapies. For the greatest benefit, at least three treatments are recommended no matter which technique is used.

Reiki can bring healing on many levels. It also induces relaxation and peacefulness. Even the terminally can ill benefit from Reiki. It can ease their pain (physical and emotional); help them sleep better and bring them peace. It can be used on babies, pets, plants, food, vitamins and medications as well!

Within the last decade, more and more healthcare professionals have come to take Reiki seriously. Many of them (especially massage therapists) are learning Reiki themselves in order to enhance their traditional practices.

I realize things that seem unusual, strange or intangible are sometimes hard to take seriously. I would ask that you please try and keep an open mind and read on. I once read that when Thomas Edison was asked what electricity was and how it worked, his response was, "I don't know how it works, but it works! Let's use it!" Now there is some food for thought!

If you are interested in Bible study, you will find the following in I Corinthians 12:4-11, "Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses." (Taken from The Harper Collins Study Bible). Though many of us hold different opinions of the Bible and its translations, it must be admitted that these are very profound words. My reason for sharing this verse is to point out that each of us have our own gifts. These gifts are our birthright. We each just have to discover what our individual gifts are and develop them.

Reiki can be passed on to any individual, including children, by a Reiki Master. The process of passing on this energy is called an attunement. There are three levels of Reiki, each one requiring a different attunement and additional knowledge. After the Reiki Three Attunement, one can then learn to pass attunements to others. It is not recommended to get the Reiki Attunements all very close together. Personally, I recommend waiting six months to a year between each of the Attunements. However, there are those who get them closer together than that. On that note, I will just say, follow your intuition. If it doesn't seem right; you do not feel ready, please wait. I will grant you, you will always be able to find a Reiki Master!

Those of you familiar with Reiki may be aware of Reiki lineage. Mine goes as follows -- Reiki I attunement in 1996 and Reiki II attunement in 1999, both from the following lineage: Dr. Mikao Usui, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, Hawayo Takata, Bethel Phaigh, Marv Witbeck, and Debbie Avalos who gave me both those attunements. In 2001 I received my Reiki III attunement its lineage is as follows -- Dr. Mikao Usui, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, Hawayo Takata, Bethel Phaigh, Marv Witbeck, Debbie Avalos, and Jeanne Porter Ashley who performed my third attunement by using the distant method.

I an located near the County Line between Cabarrus and Rowan Counties, North Carolina, so if you are in a nearby county, I can make arrangements to perform Reiki Energy sessions for you in person. I have gone to hospitals, to perform Reiki Sessions for those who desire them. I will also go to Rehabilitation Centers and/or Retirement Homes.

Pendulum Readings

The use of a pendulum to acquire answers is called dowsing or divining. Those who practice the art of pendulum dowsing are called pendulists or dowsers. Pendulums are made of many different things, stones, herbs, metals, pencils. They are made up simply of almost any small weight attached to a chain or string that can freely swing. It is not hard to make a pendulum. My favorite pendulum is one that I have had for many years. It is a quartz crystal point on a sterling chain with a sterling hook I can hang on my right index finger. (Left-handers would use their left index finger.) I also have another one I enjoy, that is made of a blue-lace agate teardrop on a sterling chain with a white chalcedony ball at the top. You can find pendulums in many forms. There are many uses for pendulums. They can even be used to determine if a vitamin, supplement, or herb is the right one for you. Pendulums are probably most often used for "yes/no/maybe" questions. There are various charts that can be used with a pendulum to gain all kinds of information. Though it is not really necessary to have charts in order to get accurate answers from a pendulum, the charts can be quite helpful and aid in determining an answer more quickly. I use my pendulum with and without charts. As far as charts go, I really like my percentage of probability chart.

Pendulum readings are quick and easy. I have had very good results using this form of divination. If you have a question you need an answer to, but are short on time, a pendulum reading may be just right for you.

I found my copy of this book on the used bookshelf at The Rainbow Path in Charlotte, North Carolina. (Sad to say, the recession has took Rainbow Path "out"!) Smudge: What It Is And What Are Its Uses

Smudge is often simply a small bundle of sage, or a few pinches of sage in a smudge bowl with sand in the bottom. It is burned in order to use its smoke for the purpose of clearing a space or an item of any negative energies that may be contained therein. Some people insist on using only white sage only. However, many people do not like the smell of the white sage by itself. There are smudge sticks that combine other herbs and/or resins with white sage, such as lavender and copal which smells great! I like to make my own smudge mixes. I will mix a blend especially for you upon request. See above list of services rendered.

The book, Spiritual Astrology, by Jan Spiller, is the only book I have seen with information on your Prenatal Solar and Lunar Eclipses. There are tables provided in the back to help you determine your Prenatal Eclipses, as well as the location of all of the planets in your natal chart. This book does not go very deeply into your Sun Sign, as is stated in therein. However, there is enough information in this book to make one's head spin! This is a must have for astrology lovers.

The Sun -- Self-Expression

At this time, the Sun is in the sign of Pisces. Pisces time is great for developing intuition! Be sure to pay close attention to your dreams while the Sun is visiting Pisces! The Moon --Emotions

The Moon has great bearing on our emotions, just as it does the sea. The Moon stays in each sign about two and one-half days. Today the Moon is in Libra and will be moving into Scorpio within the next day or so. Thought I always enjoy reading for others, Scorpio Moon is my favorite time of each month to do my readings. I always look forward to it!

Moon Void Of Course

When the Moon is moving from one sign to another, it is said to be void of course. You may see this term abbreviated as voc or v/c. When the Moon is void of course it is said that "She is not talking to anyone!" Therefore, it is not the best time for decision making or for important conversations. It is however a great time for going within oneself, meditation and contemplation. Naturally, there are decisions and conversations that must go on during the void of course period. However, if such things can wait until the Moon is more stable, results will be better. The amount of time the Moon is void of course varies -- it can be minutes or most of a day. The Moon is in each sign for about two and a half days.

The Rising Sign -- or Your Ascendant

The Rising Sign, also called the Ascendant, is the sign of the zodiac that was just rising over the Eastern Horizon at the very moment one was born. That is why the time and place of birth are so important in astrology. The Rising Sign is said to be one's "Astrological Mask" -- it is how you appear and has a lot to do with how you present yourself. Some astrologers believe that the placement of one's Ascendant is as important as that of the Sun. The only way to determine one's Ascendant, is to have their exact date, time and place of birth. With this information, an astrologer or an astrology program, can determine the rising sign.

Mercury has bearing on communication, air waves, travel, mail, almost anything that moves or travels by air waves. The Mercury Rx peroids are not a good times to sign contracts, shop (especially for electronics), ship things, etc. This time is best used for things that begin with the prefix "re-"... redo, rework, review, revisit... Chiron -- Healing

On December 6th, 2005, Chiron moved from Capricorn back into Aquarius. Looking a little further ahead, Chiron will move into Pisces April 20th, 2010; go retrograde June 5th, 2010; re-enter Aquarius July 21st, 2010. If you are interested in a good book on Chiron, Essence and Application: A View From Chiron, was written by Zane B. Stein. Zane has a marvelous website, Chiron and Friends which covers this little rogue planet/planetoid quite well. He also has informaion on the other asteroids, as they relate to astrology. (See my "Links" section.) Though I have not read this book, based on the content of Zane's website, as well as the correspondence I have had with him, I have no doubt that this is a marvelous book. Asteroids in Astrology -- Do Not Discount Them

The asteroids are Ceres (now in Scorpio), Juno (Taurus), Pallas (Libra), Vesta (Gemini), and many people list Chiron (Capricorn) as an asteroid. I like the description of Chiron I found someplace that refers to it as a "rogue planet/planetoid"! I'll be adding more information about the asteroids, soon.

Sedna -- Our "Newest" Planet

Sedna, (I will leave this outdated information on for the time being.) our newest "planet", was named for the mythological character of Sedna, and so will inevitably carry similar traits. Currently Sedna is in the sign of Taurus. I have read some of information that is available on Sedna, as it relates to astrology. This new "planet" was sited November 14th, 2003, though general population was not informed until March 15th, 2004. There seems to be some argument going on as to whether it actually is a planet. I have a feeling that it will be deemed a planet before all is said and done. There is a great deal that is not yet determined about Sedna. I can tell you that it is quite icy and has a temperature of around -400 degrees Fahrenheit! Lady Sarolta DeFaltay, owner of MoonSpells (the fantastic site and newsletters I mentioned above), wrote an excellent article on Sedna. I handfed him until he could eat on his own. He could not have been over three weeks old when he wandered into my life, toddling out of the shadows and right into my open hand -- steady "talking"! After petting him and enjoying the amazement of how tame, fearless and adorable he was, I told him to go back to his Mom, as he was entirely to young to be wandering around! I put him down and he wandered right back into the same shadows he had wandered out of, under the house -- again, he was steady "talking". Two days later, I looked out the kitchen window and saw him wandering around in the driveway -- that is the day I became his "Mom"! I estimate his birthday as being on or around April 7th, 2003 -- he toddled into my hand and my life on April 27th, 2003 with eyes still glazed! So, this is Merlin's Corner! The kitty above is not Merlin, but it could pass for him. Below, find a photo of Merlin the Fearless -- my little shadow kitty. He is quite a cat -- "a cat's cat" one man said; with a face that will melt even the hardest heart! I have seen it happen, first hand!
