Words

Sometimes I hate words.
They make me stumble when I try
to stretch,
All because I overestimate their
elasticity;
They leave me lonely when I try
to join in,
All because I miscalculate the
other's vocabulary.
So many times
I try to clarify and create confusion
instead,
I try to console and deepen despair
instead,
I try to inspire and undermine
morale instead,
I try to inform and encourage ignorance
instead --
All because of damn stupid, clumsy
words.
But when souls are in synch,
God, I love words.
They let me soar above the chasms
of confusion,
They dance away the dregs of despair,
And elevate my consciousness in
the face of defeat
While they transform suspicions
into knowledge.
Words can sing and dance in wild
abandon,
Words can put things in solemn
perspective,
Words can teach and heal,
Words can fly,
Words can dig to the bottom of
a problem
And trigger emotions more complicated
Than they can delineate.
The chemistry of words brings magic
to my life,
Swirling in, each with its army
Of synonyms and antonyms that enrich
expression
And build bridges where no bridges
have been before.
