When people think of Singapore many think of "clean and green" to describe this little republic. And Singapore has its share of green places. On this page I will attempt to bring you some of those green places to visit while your here.

If your into animals then be sure to make the Singapore Zoo one of your outings. The Singapore Zoo is a model of the `open zoo' concept. The animals are kept in spacious, landscaped enclosures, separated from the visitors by dry or wet moats. The moats are concealed with vegetation or dropped below the line of vision. In the case of dangerous animals such as leopards and jaguars which can climb very well, moat barriers are not used. Instead, these animals are housed in beautifully landscaped glass-fronted enclosures. Be sure to see the Night Safari while your at the Zoo but don't be scared. Or you can always try our wonderful Bird Park.

Perhaps you prefer flowers instead of animals? If that is the case then the Botanic Gardens is the place for you.

Ok ok you want to just get away from it all your saying? Ok well then if hiking  in the great outdoors is what you want then you can try MacRitchie Reservoir which hosts many animals such as monitor lizards and wild monkeys. In addition the trails are clearly defined and as long as you stay on them you should not have any trouble with getting lost.

You'll find boardwalks skirting the edge of the scenic MacRitchie Reservoir and walking trails through the forest. They range in distances from 3 km to 11 km, allowing nature lovers to experience as much or even as little of the nature reserves as they like. Interpretative signboards along the boardwalks reveal the mysteries of nature and allow for a self-guided tour along the fringes of the MacRitchie forest

Also a great place to get away from it all is the Sungei Buloh Wetland Preserve. Here you can see many wild plants and animals including various fish, crabs, monitor lizards, migratory birds and much more.

Not far enough away from the city?? Ok then try Pulau Ubin for some great cycling or hiking. Pulau Ubin has been kept almost entirely in its wild state with primarily only a few small Kampong style homes, one small village for you to see and a few other places of interest. The roads are well maintained and the traffic is minimal so your cycling or hiking experience between you and nature. Oh and don't forget to stop by one of the roadside drinks stalls and keep yourself hydrated in the Singapore heat.

Life on Ubin

A trip to Pulau Ubin is a throwback to Singapore in the 1960’s. The island is home to Singapore’s last villages or “kampongs” – there are still about a hundred villagers living here. Ubin residents rely on wells for water and noisy diesel generators for electricity. Some villagers depend on traditional farming and fishing for subsistence, while others tend to their provision stores and eateries. At the main village, near the jetty, some houses have been converted to bicycle rental shops to support a quiet tourist trade.

For other outdoor sites you can check online at the Singapore National Parks website.
