Megan's Chance

May 24-Aug.17, 2002

I have been recieiving emails from people thinking this filly was mine. Please keep in mind this is a memorial made for Megan's Chance, owned by Denise Bell Evans. I am not the owner, only the creator of this memorial for her. Thank you.

Denise and Chance

When a neighbour pleaded for some goat's milk for his nephew's sick filly, Denise Bell-Evans of Amarugia Stallion Station had no idea how this little sorrel filly with a heart of gold would affect her life. Taking over care of this sweet little filly, Denise posted updates on Chance's condition. Megan's Chance had neonatal septicaemia (aka Navel Ill or Joint Ill). This was caused by fescue grass that Chance's mother consumed while she was expecting. All of Chance's joints were badly swollen, she had ulcers in her mouth, fevers and her legs were disfigured. Due to to the fact that all Chance could do was lie down, she developed pressure sores. Little Chance was in rough shape. Denise kept feeding Chance goat's milk and even let Chance feed right off the nanny goat. (see pic below) Eventually, Chance became Denise's filly, and Denise was extremely happy. Through grueling, emotionally draining days, Denise toiled with Chance and she improved! A sling was attached (pic below) and Chance was on her feet at last. A few times a day Chance would walk on her own after the sling was removed. Things were looking up for Chance. Everyone on the internet continued supporting Denise and Chance, whether financially, or emotionally. We all rooted for little Chance to make it. While the world watched, Chance bonded with Denise and it was obvious they had a special thing going on. Unfortunately, little Chance began to take a turn for the worse. She developed pneumonia and despite effort, and the fact that Chance was such a fighter with a fierce determination for life, her joints became inflamed again and the prognosis for Chance to ever walk were diminished. Chance was put to sleep on Aug. 17, 2002. Little Chance, you had two glorious months on earth, may you rest in peace little girl and run forever free of pain in Heaven's pastures. As for Denise, she has made a monumental effort and poured all her love into this filly and she deserves an honourable mention, so without further ado, Denise you are a wonderful person to take in Chance and do what you did for her. She had a short life, but she was loved by more people than you'll ever know. Condolances on the loss of a brave little girl.
