Chapter Six

The darkness loomed over Guldtosia like a blanket of shadows. Rebecca and Samuel easily escaped the notice of the Mediators by staying in the shadows of the buildings. Rebecca had gotten used to the weight of her new sword easily, it was as if she had known the weight of carrying a weapon like it her entire life. Then there was the fact that all of her senses were alert, telling her exactly what was going on around her. She knew every movement, every sound. She could even hear her own heartbeat, her pulse, and even her breathing. She should have been apprehensive, but she wasn’t. She was calm, calm and alert.

“Was I a warrior in a past life?” she thought. “Is that where these skills are coming from?”

She stopped suddenly, and listened closely to the night. Six Mediators, wearing full armour, carrying swords, searching for them – they were panicked, Rebecca knew that from their quickened breathing. She drew her sword, and she heard Samuel do the same.

“There are six armed Mediators coming this way,” she said. “If we can’t evade them, we’ll have to fight.”

Samuel came up beside Rebecca and looked at her. “How do you know?” he whispered. “I can’t hear anything.”

“I just know.” Rebecca moved ahead, keeping in the shadows. Either that teacher of hers was really good, or Rebecca had always possessed warrior skills. Either way, he knew that he wasn’t going to have to worry about her. He moved as quietly as he could, and then he saw them: the Mediators. There were six of them, as Rebecca said, and they were armed as well. They were looking all around them, and Samuel thought that he saw…something about them that wasn’t quite human. He noticed that Rebecca was looking at them through narrowed eyes, her sword ready for combat.

“Let’s go,” she said. “They’re guarding the only way out of the city. We’re going to have to kill them.”

Samuel looked at her. How calmly she said that! As if it were an everyday occurrence! Then, to his complete and utter shock, she walked out of the shadows, her dark clothing making her seem ominous.

“I am here,” she said. “Come and fight me, if you dare.”

They wasted no time. They rushed at her – and were blown back by a sudden gust of wind that came from Rebecca. She smirked as she raised her sword, holding the blade so that the point was directed at the Mediators. Samuel cursed under his breath and leapt out to aid her.

He needn’t have bothered, because the second the Mediators rushed her again, a pillar of magical energy shot up around Rebecca, and narrowed itself into her sword. She swung her blade in an arc, releasing a wave of pure destructive magic that struck the Mediators head-on.

The gate behind the Mediators was reduced to splinters as the energy wave destroyed them completely. By the time the light had died down, Rebecca was already out of the gate.

Samuel had no choice but to follow her, his mind full of questions – and fears. What was that…power? He had never seen anything like it! He looked back at the gates after he had left – and shuddered.

Rebecca was more than she appeared to be. He would ask her later as to what she had done, but first, they would meet that Alex woman in the Scorpion Forest.

“Wait!”

Mary ran up to him, completely out of breath. “You almost left me behind,” she said. She looked back at the city. “What happened back there?” she asked. “There was this huge explosion, and a bright light, and then I saw Rebecca running to the Scorpion Forest…”

“I don’t know,” Samuel replied. “Rebecca…she…well, she’s got more power than it seems. Now come on, we have to get to the Scorpion Forest.”

“Yes,” Mary replied. “That Alex woman told me to come out here and wait for you. Who is she?”

“Rebecca’s swordplay teacher,” Samuel said. “Now come on! We have to get to the Scorpion Forest!”

They ran after Rebecca, and found her and Alex waiting for them around a fire in a clearing in the Scorpion Forest. Alex was talking to Rebecca about the battle back in the city, and the fact that Rebecca was…a Sorceress. This was news to Samuel and Mary, who just stood near the fire, speechless. Finally, Alex turned to Samuel and Mary.

“Your destinies are intertwined,” she said, gazing into the flames. “You are three of the Four Warriors. You have yet to find the Fourth Warrior, but you won’t for a long time.” She looked back to Rebecca. “I knew that you were one of the Four when I saw the way you handled yourself in training – only one of the Four could have that knowledge.”

“But…Samuel and I don’t know anything about battle,” Mary said. “How can we be…?”

“You will find your skills soon enough,” Alex said. “Each of you will have skills according to your souls. Rebecca is a Sorceress, Samuel is a Knight and you, Mary, are a Cleric, a Healer.”

“What are you?” Rebecca asked.

“I am the Avatar of the God of Justice,” Alex said. “I was sent here to help you any way I could, but I did not expect the Priests of the False One to be so quick witted about who you were, Rebecca. They will stop at nothing to capture you now.”

They were all speechless, and none of them slept that night.
