He liked to cause trouble a lot, especially at school; he never got in trouble because nobody ever caught him. The first trouble he ever caused was putting a smoke ball in somebody's locker. When the principal found out, he was furious and put everybody in after-school detention, since nobody confessed to it.
Deke never did all this trouble alone, though. One of his very close friends was Angela, and she loved causing trouble almost as much as Deke.
Mostly they would pick the locks to convenient stores and steal a few drinks and take some money out of the register. Their funniest break-in was when they robbed a beer store.
It was about eleven o'clock at night, and there was a chilly wing blowing. They got in, and their was no security alarm, so they went to the back where all the god beer was and got a bunch of hard lemonade and about fifty dollars out of the cash register. As they were walking out of there store, they popped the tops off two bottles of lemonade and gulped them down. After those two were gone they got two more, until all but two large bottle of lemonade, which they were going to save for school, were gone. They were stumbling around for about two hours, and the next thing they knew they were in a lake at the park.
When they stopped tripping over everything and could understand each other, Deke asked, "What are we doing skinny-dipping in the lake?"
"I don't know," Angela replied. "The last thing I remember is walking out of the store drinking the hard lemonade."
That was just last weekend, on a Saturday. It was now Wednesday, the most boring day of the week. It was lunchtime, and they were sitting at a table beside the school. They were just sitting there eating when Angela said, "So I heard they're opening another beer store this weekend, but since they heard about the last beer store robbery they installed a security alarm"
"Do you want to take our skills a bit further or stick to the stores without security alarms?" Deke asked her.
"Well, I'd like to see if we could pull it off. We got paintball guns so we can take out the outside cameras. And we can have some fun inside the store with them. There are some bushes out in front of the store we can hide behind, and all we have to do is cut the alarm that goes off when we open the door," Angela replied. "All right. We'll go Saturday night again. Meet here, and we'll walk there; it's only a mile."
Well, Deke had a game that night, so he couldn't call anybody. On the ay to the game, he had to ride the bus. His dragon soul broke into his thoughts and told him, "I sense another dragon soul, and it's very close."
"Do you know who it's in?" Deke asked.
"Yes, it's in Angela, and it's about to awaken. You said that she could weld the power of black magic?" he answered.
"Yes, she can but she said only on a mental level." Deke told him.
"If she knows black magic she will find the spell to change into dragon form if she does not already know it," the soul told Deke.
"Well, if she says the incantation, will I change, too?" Deke asked.
"Yes."
"It she stronger than I am?" Deke asked.
"No, not from what I can sense, but beware. She carries anger inside her which can overcome any amount of strength, maybe even both of us." The soul answered.
He needed to talk to Angela. "Hey, Angela, have you been noticing any sharpening of your senses?"
"What do you mean?" she asked.
"Well, I can't talk about it here. Meet me after school and we'll talk then," he told her. She agreed and went to class.
After school, they met at the same table they eat at every day, and Angela asked, "So what's this that you need to talk to me about, that you could not say before?"
"You may not believe me, but here goes. I have a dragon soul joined with my own, and it said it sensed another dragon soul that was about to awaken.in you."
"All right, so let me get this right. You have a dragon soul, which can talk to you, and I have one inside me, too. Ha. You're right I don't believe you. I need more proof than just words; can't you change forms or something?"
"No. You're the only one who can weld the power until I change forms for the first time," He told her.
"Well even if you're telling the truth, I told you I can only do magic on a mental level. All attempts to bring it to a physical level have failed," Angela told him.
"Well, maybe you said the incantation wrong or messed up on preparations. Just try and find the spell to change forms," Deke said.
They left the school, and when Angela got home, she immediately got on the internet to look for the spell. She got on every search engine and typed in "form-changing spells".
Finally, after looking for five hours, she found the spell and printed everything she needed.
The next day, Angela told Deke she had found the spell and would try it whenever she became aware of her so-called dragon soul.
Thursday and Friday flew by in a flash, and they were getting ready to leave for the newest beet store. They had their paintball guns with twenty- five paintballs loaded and CO2 cartridges for more power. They hid behind the bushes, waiting for the camera to turn their way. Just as Angela was about to pull the trigger to shoot the camera lense she dropped her gun, grabbed for her chest and screamed in pain. Seeing the camera would pick up the sound of the screaming he picked up Angela's fun and fired four rounds out of each gun which took the whole came out.
He dropped the guns and ran to Angela's side asking her what was the matter.
She said, "I'm fine, but I think you were right about the dragon soul. It's like I see the world in a whole different way."
"Well do you have the spell?" Deke asked.
"Yeah just gimme a while to set it up," she answered. She got it all set up and said the incantation just as she was supposed to. Just as she finished the last word, they were surrounded by red mist. In only a matter of seconds they had changed into dragons.
They both had different names than their human names in dragon form, Deke's was Rajko and Angela's was Tawny. They found that the movies about dragons were wrong; dragons never had to learn how to fly, breath fire or ice, or turn invisible. They decided since they were faster and more powerful than any army they would have some fun.
First, they froze the entire beer store over to make the owner freak out whenever he came in. It would take a 1400 degree fire to melt the ice from around the store. Then they went to city hall and all the police stations and froze them just like the beer store. That was all they were going to do; until the next day, after they saw the news report about all the buildings getting frozen and reasons why the police thought it happened.
The next day, after school, Deke turned the news on and they had just started the report over the frozen buildings. The newscaster said, "Late last night, someone put an ice barrier over a beer store, the city hall, and all the police stations in town. Even after many attempts, firefighters couldn't melt the ice."
After about a week of confusing locals, they got bored and decided to go national. They changed forms, flew to Washington D.C. to the White House where they froze the central part of the building, totally destroyed the east wing, set fire to the west wing, and destroyed every monument in the vicinity.
They hadn't noticed but six air force jets had been sent to the national capitol. Rajko noticed they were coming before Tawny did, so he sent two fireballs in their direction and took out two of their planes. Tawny did the same and took out two planes after on flew right under her wing.
The two dragons decided to have fun with the jets by doing dips and rolls. When Tawny was about to do a dip and a flip, she was hit by a machine fun bullet in the wing. When the bullet hit her she slammed into the water of the Atlantic Ocean, doing a corkscrew. One of the pilots saw this and sent two missiles into the water after her.
Tawny saw the missiles coming at her and took them on an obstacle course under water. She dived down until she found some rocks and went around and through them. When she had a good lead on the missiles she turned to see where they were and slammed straight into the side of a cliff. While all this was happening, Rajko destroyed the last two fighter pilots. Right as he destroyed the last one he looked at the water and saw an explosion. As the water flew into the air Tawny popped out of the top of the mountain of water. She had awakened just in time to evade the missiles. She shot up, and the missiles slammed into the cliff face as she got away.
They went home along the coast; they had had enough excitement for one day. When they go home Rajko and Tawny changed back into their human forms, and Deke asked Angela, "So how does it feel to be able to go anywhere whenever you want?"
She answered, "It feels better than getting drunk, actually, especially being able to swim in dragon form. It's like the water is pushing you on as it flows over your wings. It's really refreshing. You ought to try it next time. What about you? How does it feel to fly or be a dragon for that matter"
"Well, first off, flying is like meditating; it relaxes you. Then, being able to shoot fire and ice is just plain fun. Being a hell of a lot stronger in dragon form than this form is great, especially smashing that plan into the other. That was just hilarious; he even tried to fly it out of my grip." Deke answered.
"Let me but in at this point." Deke's soul said in his head. "Since you have been in your dragon form you now have just as much strength in this form as you do in your dragon form. The two forms strength and speed are now in sync."
"Oh my god, that's awesome!" Deke yelled.
"What?" Angela asked.
"Listen to your dragon soul and find out." Deke told her.
Angela concentrated and then after her dragon soul told her she agreed with Deke that it was awesome.
"Well hey you want to thaw that beer store, get some beer, and see how it feels to fly drunk?" Deke asked.
"Sure, I always wondered how that would feel ever since we first froze that beer store," she answered.
That weekend, they went back to the store, which was still frozen solid, with paintball guns in hand. They changed into their dragon forms and melted the ice off the building, changed back into their human form and crouched behind the bushes out front. Deke aimed the gun at the camera but before he good find a shot Angela put her hand on the gun, lowered it, and said, "How about instead of flying drunk, how about we just spend this night flying around together, sober."
"Are you serious?" Deke asked her. After looking her in the eye and seeing she was he said, "Ok that's cool."
They ran home, left their guns at Deke's place, changed into their dragon forms, and flew off. After flying toward the mountains for an hour they finally seen a peak and landed on it. They changed into humans and just sat there starring at the stars with Deke leaned up against a stone ledge and Angela with her back to his chest.
They sat there for hours starring at the stars when finally Angela said, "Lets go swimming, what do you say?"
"Ok, fine with me."
They took off from the peak and found a lake near their home and landed on the bank. They didn't want to get their clothes wet so Angela suggested skinny-dipping and they both agreed. Angela went behind a bush while Deke just turned his back and waited for her to jump in. After a minute he finally heard Angela jump in and tell him that he could undress now so he just took off all his clothes in clear sight of Angela and dived in.
"You aren't too concerned with people seeing you are you?" Angela asked him.
"No, should I be?" Deke asked.
She laughed and said, "You might not be but I wouldn't do what you just did even if it was in front of a friend."
"Oh c'mon you look great. I just do it because I don't care what other people think of me."
"Really, what about what I think of you?" Angela asked.
"What do you mean?" Deke asked.
"Nothing." Angela said and then dived under the water.
"Hey, come back here!" Deke yelled and dived in after her. He kept chasing her for a few minutes then finally caught her and said, "Got you, where you going to go now?"
"Up." She said and smiled as she kicked her feet downward and shot off of Deke's arms and toward the surface.
Deke followed her and finally surfaced beside her, "That was fun; we ought to swim more often." After he said that they decided to float and look at the stars again. Soon enough they both found themselves half asleep while they were starring aimlessly at the sky.
When Angela woke from their half sleep she looked at her watch and it was a quarter to five so she woke Deke up and said, "Deke, wake up, we need to get home."
"Huh, what are you talking about it's only been a few minutes." Deke said.
"No, we've been floating for an hour; it's a quarter to five." Angela answered.
"What?" Deke asked and started making his way for the shore then stopped short remembering he didn't have his clothes on. "Uh, I'll go ahead and get dressed that way I can make sure no one is coming while you get dressed."
"Are you sure?" Angela asked.
"Yeah, if you got dressed first I'd see you since I could see behind that bush when I'm in the lake." Deke told her, got out and started to get dressed. After he was done he turned toward Angela expecting her to walk out of the lake, "What are you waiting for?"
"Hmm, I don't know maybe for you to turn around." She told him.
Deke started laughing and then turned his back toward the lake while Angela made her way back to behind the bush where her clothes were.
After she got dressed she walked up behind Deke and popped the back of his head and said, "There I'm done," started laughing and gave him a hug before taking off toward her home. While she left Deke watched her until she was out of sight.
When Deke got home he dropped in bed and thought about the night that just went by. After another hour of thinking he finally realized how he felt. After hanging out with Angela for the past year Deke was getting attracted to her and was going to ask her out Monday after school. Before school started, Deke told Angela to meet him after school.
During second period Angela got into an argument with one of her arch rivals, Kasey, and Kasey told her, "Watch your back; you might see something popping out at you." She said it with a sly voice like she was planning something.
During lunch, Deke and Angela were on their way to their table and Kasey walked by, dropped her tray, reached for the back of her pants, pulled out a dagger, and slit Angela's throat, then stabbed her in her chest. She left the dagger in her chest and ran.
Deke yelled, "No!" Angela fell to the ground, clutching the dagger and Deke got down next to her and propped her head against his lap. Before long Angela had lost too much blood to be saved, so Deke put his head on hers. Just before she died, he whispered in her ear, "I'm sorry it ended this way, may we meet again in the next life," and said something else where no one could hear.
He slowly lowered her to the ground, and she fell limp. A crowd had gathered as he sat there and as he left the anger and pain combined caused everyone in front of him to be thrown twenty feet away as he flung his arms to signal people to move out of the way so he could leave. Since both souls lost something when she died the pain of losing them was too much. He decided after he found Kasey he'd end his life. It took about thirty minutes to find Kasey since she went and hid after she killed Angela.
"Come out and face me instead of hiding like a coward." Deke yelled.
"I'm no coward!" Kasey yelled and ran at Deke with another knife.
Deke dodged, grabbed her arm, and twisted it behind her back, "You killed the one person I care about so now you will her in death." He tossed the knife to the ground. "You won't kill me, you don't have the guts." Kasey said.
Deke turned her around, grabbed her throat, and lifted her off the ground choking her, "Don't I?" She grabbed his hand and tried to push it away from her throat but to no avail. He raised his fist and was about to break her skull with a punch but someone grabbed his arm. When he turned to see who stopped him he nearly dropped Kasey. "Y.you died half an hour ago."
"I know but I'm back, I'll explain it later just put Kasey down." Angela told him.
He slowly started to let the girl down but when she tried to kick him he threw her into a try just hard enough to knock her out, "How did you come back" Deke asked.
"I never died, actually. Tawny said that the only way I can die is if her heart is pierced not mine. So we're almost immortal. Oh yeah, I heard that last thing you said to me before I blacked out." Angela said and then leaned forward, "I love you too."
"Oh, heh, well thank the gods you came now. After I was done with Kasey I was going to end it all. And Rajko must have forgotten that the dragon heart had to be pierced because he was just as depressed as I was." Deke told her.
"Really, why?" Angela asked.
"I couldn't stand the thought of living without you and obviously Rajko felt the same about Tawny." Deke told her.
"Well I'm glad you didn't." Angela said and hugged him.
Kasey woke up angry and said, "What the hell are you, no one could have survived that and no one is that strong."
Angela threw a rope at her with spikes on the ends and Kasey was forced back against the tree trapped by the spikes being locked on the other side, "You stay there, I'm sure the cops will want to see you." Both Deke and Angela walked away and headed toward the school.
"We're going to have a little trouble explaining all this, with you dying then coming back to life and what I did after I thought you died." Deke told her.
"What did you do that would need explaining?" Angela asked.
"Well whenever I walked away from your body to find Kasey I flung my arms apart to motion people to move and they were sent backwards through the air." Deke replied.
"Cool, oh well I'm sure we'll figure something out on the way." Angela said.
"Oh yeah, I forgot, since we're alone, I wanted to ask you something. Well you know I love you so do you want to go out with me?" Deke asked her.
Angela smiled and said, "Of course I do," and kissed him.
They got back to school later that day and came up with an alibi that everyone believed and never brought up that day again.
