Mike still didn't quite understand his power until he was in junior high and asked a girl named Jessica out. When he asked her, he started hearing her voice, but her mouth wasn't moving.
As time went on, it started getting easier and easier to read minds. At first he thought it was cool, but then he started hearing things he didn't want to hear, like false rumors and people making fun of him. Then he decided not to read people's minds as much.
When he got to high school, he read Jessica's mind and found out she had two eggs that looked funny. He asked if he could see the eggs. She was shocked that he knew about them. She asked, "How did you know about them?" He motioned her to follow him. Since she was his girlfriend he told her al about how he could read minds. At first she just thought he was crazy. She didn't believe him because he always was joking around, getting in trouble, but she thought, "How else could he have known about the eggs? I haven't told anyone about them." So she put him to the test.
She decided to test his gift so she asked him, "What am I thinking about right now?" What she was thinking was why she had such a crazy boyfriend.
So he concentrated and told her, "You are thinking about how great it would be to have sex with me! Wow who knew?"
"WRONG!" she said as she punched his shoulder.
Mike started laughing and then said, "Nah, for real, you're thinking about why you have such a crazy boyfriend."
"You really can read minds," she said. "I guess you can come see them and maybe tell me what kind of eggs they are." So after school she took him to see the eggs.
The eggs were oval-shaped; about a foot tall and were really rough like rocks.
Mike picked one up; it was about seven pounds so he automatically cancelled out the idea that they were bird's eggs. He was rolling it over and over in his hands when he thought he heard a growl come from the egg. It surprised him, and he accidentally dropped the egg. When the egg hit the ground, it broke upon impact, a lizard-looking creature rolled out. The odd thing about the creature it had spikes running down its back to the tip of its tail. Its color was beautiful; it had blue, gold, and red all mixed in together. Both Mike and Jessica were amazed at the sight. They picked up the egg put it in a safe spot. They immediately went to go to the internet to see if they could find out what kind of lizard it was. It took them well over an hour to find it but when they did they were surprised to find it classified under dragon! It was part of a clan the Chinese call something but Mike couldn't pronounce it. About a thousand years ago there were only a few left and when there was only one left, dragon slayers killed it. The monks who were trying to protect the dragons later found that the dragon had been pregnant and had already laid her eggs. The monks set out to find the eggs and when they did find them they hid them in a cave and covered them with rocks making sure no one would find them. The eggs were guarded as well and nearly 900 years after they were hidden they were stolen and never found again. The site went on to say if any of the dragons were found, they were not to be killed because of their magnificence. They went back and did exactly what they had done with the other-rolled it over and over in their hands until they heard a growl, they dropped it. They were right; out came another dragon. They decided to keep both dragons. Jessica named hers Gwyned and Mike named his Draco.
Both Mike and Jessica automatically assumed the dragons ate meat so they went and bought some hamburgers took the patties out and laid them out beside the dragons. The dragons ate pretty quickly. Mike and Jessica had assumed right.
Since the dragons couldn't talk, Mike had to read their minds to know what they wanted. Jessica and Mike would as the dragons a question. Mike would read their minds for an answer. "How are we going to keep them?" Jessica asked. "They're too obvious to carry around."
"You think your mom will let me stay over here so we can stay up and figure something out?" he asked.
"I doubt it, but it's worth a try." She said. So he went downstairs with Jessica and asked her mom if he could stay over tonight.
She hesitated, and then said, "We'll see, I'll have to talk to your mom."
So they went back upstairs while Jessica's mom picked up the phone and started dialing. The moms had a lengthy conversation about anything other than Mike staying over and then finally, Jessica's mom told Mike's mom Mike wanted to stay over tonight and asked what she thought would be the best thing to do. Mike's mom said, "Hmmm a boy and a girl who like each other under the same roof for a night not a good combination. Mike knows what he's not supposed to do so don't worry. Let him stay. Just tell him to sleep on the couch. As soon as she hung up the phone she yelled that Mike could stay over as long as he slept on the couch. Jessica yelled back ok and they worked out a plan for feeding the dragons. Since they had to be fed in the middle of the day, someone would have to come home and feed them. Since Mike had a bike, they decided to take turned riding the bike to Jessica's to feed the dragons.
Five days passed and already the dragons were six feet tall. On the sixth day, Jessica came home to find them gone. Jessica and Mike found one hiding in the closet, and the other was invisible.
Jessica asked them why they were hiding. Mike started to read their minds when one growled. Then the dragons spoke!
Draco told them that somebody had been coming up the stairs, so Gwyned hid in the closet while Draco disappeared.
Mike asked, "How did you learn to speak English?"
Gwyned said, "Everyday, while you and Jessica were at school, we practiced saying words in your language. Each day we got better, until finally, we decided to see how good we were by talking to you two today."
Jessica asked, "Then how did you disappear, Draco?"
Dragons are part of magic. We use magic everyday," answered Draco, "though some dragons have not yet mastered the art of disappearing."
"You haven't been outside since you hatched. Later tonight, do you want to go outside and test you wings?" asked Mike. If they could fly, Mike and Jessica could go for a ride on the dragons' backs'.
We'll meet at the park at midnight." Said Jessica.
The park since no one would be around would be a perfect spot.
Draco tried to test his wings first. He spread his wings and thrust them toward the ground as hard as he could. He sent a dust cloud flying around them. When the dust settled, he was flapping his wings in the air about twenty feet up.
Next, Gwyned spread her wings and leapt into the air. As soon as the dust settled, Mike and Jessica saw her beside Draco, flapping her wings. They slowly let themselves drop to the ground. Mike got on Draco and Jessica got on Gwyned.
As they lifted off the ground, both Jessica and Mike were pushed downward until the dragons stopped ascending. When they were about thirty feet in the air, the dragons flew forward.
Gwyned asked, "Where are we gonna go?"
"How about the beach?" asked Jessica. "Do dragons like water?"
"Yeah, but we like going in deep water," Draco told her.
Mike said, "That's cool. Its 2010. We have air devices that change the carbon dioxide in the water into oxygen, so we can breath." They got to the beach, and the dragons landed on the water and used their wings to float.
As soon as Mike and Jessica were ready, the dragons dived under the water. First they, swam to a coral reef to look at fish. Jessica told Mike to look at one of the fish near the reef. It was a rainbow fish, and she told him that was her favorite fish because it had so many colors. Just then, a school of sea horses passed by.
The next stop was a water cave that had little rocks that sparkled as they passed by. To their surprise, in the cave they found stone figurines that portrayed dragons, mythical creatures and many, many others. The statues sparkled which made them look like they were made of crystal. The dragons said this cave was supposed to be a time-line. Each time a person befriends one of these creatures and the creature shows them the cave, the creature's statues will crumble.
"Well, then." Jessica was interrupted by the sound of crumbling. They all looked back to see that the dragon statues had crumbled.
The next day at school, Mike feel asleep during second period, and Jessica feel asleep during fourth period. Both got pick slips, and both were sent to the principal's office. Since they knew they were going to be grounded they talked about plans for the night. Mike suggested going to the desert to test the dragons' fire-breathing skills. "Arizona sound good?" Mike asked.
"Yeah," Jessica told him. "We'll talk to the dragons about it alter," she added.
When they got home they showed their moms the pick slips and both their moms said, "You're grounded!" They were not to leave the yard, talk on the phone, and no playing on the computer. Since it was their first time with pink slips, this was for the weekend. Since it was the weekend, they could fly all night and sleep all day. That night they met at the park again and headed toward Arizona.
Gwyned asked, "How did you know that we could breathe fire?"
Mike said, "Well aside from every movie showing dragons breathe fire we read that you could on a website we looked up. It took us an hour just to find out that you were dragons. It said the Chinese called you something was couldn't pronounce, and it also said you breathed fire, so we waited until you were big enough to see if you could really do it." Gwyned went first. She took a deep breath and let it out. Instead of air, fire came out. Next was Draco's turn so he took in a deep breath and let it out, but instead of air or fire ice came out!"
"What was that?!" Jessica asked.
"Draco breathed ice that what it is!" Mike said. "Dragons have a fire lung as well as an ice lung," he added.
"How did you know about that?" asked Gwyned.
"When I got home from out little swim the other night, I got back on the internet, on a different website that said it." Mike told them.
They both tried again and this time, instead of fire, Gwyned breathed ice, and Draco breathed fire. It was right before dawn when they got back. Later that day, a man in a dark, red robe came to Mike's house asking if he could see Mike. His mom said, "I guess, but you got twenty minutes."
The man went upstairs to Mike's room, knocked on the door and went in.
"Who are you?" asked Mike.
"My name is Drakon. I'm here to see the dragons," he said.
"Wha., how did you know about the dragons?" Mike asked.
"I'm the one who planted the eggs, but your girlfriend found them instead of you. I must talk to her and you together. If is of utmost importance."
"Well you'll have to wait until after school Monday because were both grounded for the weekend," Mike said.
"That's okay, but this has to be settled by Friday," Drakon said.
Monday, on the way to school, Mike talked to Jessica about Drakon. She told Mike it would have to be late that night before he can see the dragons.
After school, while they were walking home, they saw Drakon coming up behind them. He asked, "Where are the dragons?"
"They're hiding right now," said Jessica.
Drakon said, "Meet me at the park, at midnight."
Later that night, Drakon looked at the dragons and noticed that they had been taken good care of. He told them how Mike was supposed to find the eggs because he could read minds and tell when they were hungry. He told them the only reason there were only a few dragons left one thousand years ago was because they were moved into another world. He also told them the eggs were planted because they had to be taught survival techniques. He said when they taught them to breath fire and fly they were ready, but they also taught them how to breathe ice, which is another survival technique that most dragons never master. He told Jessica and Mike that if the dragons did not go through the portal by Friday, both would start getting weak and keep getting week until they died.
Mike asked, "Well we ever see them again?"
Drakon told him, "Yes, but only when you fall asleep and only if you keep a creative mind."
"Can we at least keep them until Thursday night?" Jessica asked.
"I guess, but have them back here the same time Thursday."
They said their goodbyes Thursday night Jessica asked the dragons what this other world looked like, but before they could answer Drakon came up and asked if they were ready. They both said yes and Drakon started saying a spell. A few minutes later, a bright circle floated above the ground. Just before the dragons went through the portal both Jessica and Mike hugged their dragons. As the last part of Draco's tail disappeared, the portal disappeared with him. Later, when they got home they went to sleep. Drakon was right; just as both fell asleep hey saw each other in a place where every tree had at least one flower and every day after that, they would meet in this world and talk to their friends the dragons.
