Background: Highly well known for her awesome side-scrolling (and now 3-D FPS with Metroid Prime), Samus has been through a wide array of challenges. She is also considered a very infamous bounty hunter which Space Pirates pray to not run into. Being infused with Chozo blood and being given Chozo technology (hence, her suit) Samus's strengths and abilities were nearly multiplied. Orphaned as a child, the Chozo adopted her and raised her until she was old enough to venture out on her own. In Metroid, she battled Mother Brain. In Metroid 2: Return of Samus, she went to the Metroid's home planet SR-388 and fought against the Metroid Queen (one of the hardest bosses IMO). In the awesome Super Metroid, she went back to Zebes and fought against Mother Brain yet again (a very cool battle I might add). In Metroid Fusion, the powerful X organisms attacked when Samus wiped out the Metroid's on SR-388, her suit was then fused with Metroid DNA in order to save her life and give her a cool "organic" look. In Metroid Prime, she fought against the Space Pirates in Tallon IV and battled Metroid Prime (for the confused; Metroid Prime takes place in between Metroid 1 and Metroid 2). I consider Samus to be the coolest female lead character ever in video game history.
