Chironian History
Chiron was the first of the Centauri to exist in the Aboveworld. It is recorded that the then ruler of the Universe, Kronos, had been told that because of his terrible crime against his father, Ourandos, he would be overthrown by his son. To remedy this, Kronos took to swallowing his children as soon as they were born. His wife Rhea, being pregnant with the unborn Zeus, left for the isle of Crete and gave her husband a stone wrapped like a child to swallow instead of Zeus. Kronos later found he had been deceived and went in search of the young Zeus. In his search, he came across the ocean nymphe, Philyra and was overcome with desire. Philyra changed herself to a mare to escape Kronos, but he changed to a stallion to catch and consumate his desire. Philyra gave birth to Chiron, first of the Centauri races, but she considered him a monster and shunned him before asking her form be changed. Zeus changed her into a linden tree, but it is also later recorded that she lived with her son and his family on Mount Pelion.
When Chiron reached maturity at three years of age, he went in search for a companion since he was not as yet reconciled with his mother and had no one. But because his race was strange on the earth at this time, he became feral and lived with a herd of horses. By one of the mares he sired a daughter, Ione, but the birth of the centauress killed her dam. Chiron realized that he was different from the herd in that he felt loss and sadness over the death of the mare. He took his newborn filly and was taken under the wing of two Olympians, Apollon and Artemis. He and his daughter learned much from them growing as wise as the Olympians themselves and much schooled in healing, weaponry, magick, and other wisdoms. Ione was taken under the wing of the Olympian, Athena. Chiron extended Ione's name to honor the Olympian making the centauress name Ione Athene. Ione moved to live at the base of Mount Olympus though she often made the short journey between Lapithai and Olympia. Strong was the connection between father and the one daughter who shared his form. Ione still visited with the same frequency when her father married his bride, Khariklo. Khariklo bore Chiron Okyrhoe and Endeis, half sisters of Ione. Okyrhoe held the gift of sight and would be turned into a mare later for reveiling too much of the divine plan. Others claim that Okyrhoe bore a child out of wedlock and asked to be transformed to hide from Chiron who thought his daughter still a virgin. Ione missed her little. Because Apollon was unable to intercede on the renamed Melanippe's behalf, Athena bestowed a gift on Ione to atone. Athena took Ione's already strong mind and added the gifts of Telepathy and Telekinesis. Ione speant hundreds years in the tutelage of Athena and Chiron learning to master her new powers.
After the tragic demise of Chiron, Ione never ventured from her cave below Olympus. Many of her Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins from Olympus visited her, but she had no other outside contacts. How many years passed while she was in seclusion, Ione herself could not have told. Times of earth changed. The mortal races of men forsook the Olympians and many creatures as myths and legends. The medieval men were terribly superstitious, however, and many 'mythic' creatures were hunted down and destroyed. Although many mythic beasts were wiped out, dragons suffered worse than the Centauri. A few remnants of the Centauri races managed to find good hiding places, but Ione was terribly hunted as the most powerful Centauri living on the earth. At long last, Athena, her guardian of old, taught her to open the doorways between the realms. She stayed a few hundred years in Middle Earth before the men of that world turned against her following the forgetting of the elves. Finally Ione was driven to seek refuge in the welcoming realms of the Underground. Ione took up residence in the realm of the Labyrinth under the control of the Goblin King, Jareth.
(Here the history differs from that written in Son of the Labyrinth to follow the alternate history created for the rpg InsidetheLabyrinth.)
Ione became a member of the elite group of warriors known as the Knights of the Labyrinth. Through tests of strength and wisdom, Ione quickly rose to become the second in chain of command. She joined the rank of Elder, which added the privilege of sitting on the Knight's council that reported to the King and sat in on meetings. It was from this privilege that Ione first met the King. After a few years of seeing each other at meetings of the council, Jareth sought out the lovely centauress and they began a mutual relationship. They agreed to not kiss on the lips, but Jareth eventually persuaded Ione to consumate their relationship. Ione agreed as long as Jareth changed his form to centauri for the act. Their relationship became rocky when Ione became pregnant. Ione named her son Apollo Chiron to honor her beloved cousin and father. At the insistence of Jareth, Ione devised a stoy that explained the striking similarity of appearance between him and his son. Because of this distance, Ione and Jareth were still on volitile terms. Ione attempted to bridge the gap between them by changing her form to faye in order to please Jareth. This union between them became disastrous as Ione had difficulty in repeating this feat. Their daughter was still-born because Ione could not shift form fast enough to safely deliver the child. Even though Apollo became increasingly angry against his father, Ione and Jareth gradually came to terms after they found middle ground with their third child, Isis Athene. Although they were now on good terms, Jareth and Ione both agreed to an amicable separation. Jareth was not ready to become public with his inter-racial union, and Ione had a good enough excuse for Apollo's appearance. If someone asked, Ione and Apollo simply explained that Jareth had gone to take a child around the time of conception and that the magick released by the King in jumping realms influenced the child's appearance. In a sense it was true but not the whole truth. Jareth did indeed have to take a child not long after their night, but Ione left exactly how Jareth's magick influenced her unspoken... Presently, Ione and her children live in a house in the Goblin City, but they often visit Jareth secretly. Both children are well aware who their father is although they must deny this in public. In private they do refer to Jareth as father, and likewise Ione refers to Jareth by name in private. All three are extremely formal in public...
