The Master is the oldest and most powerful vampire. Sixty years ago he tried to open the Hellmouth to create a hell on earth but was trapped by an earthquake. He has been trapped in there ever since. His first attempt to free himself was The Harvest where he used Luke as his vessel to feed on people and give him the strength the break free. Luckily, Buffy staked Luke before The Master could walk. In "Prophecy Girl" it was written in the Codex, a book where everthing that is prophecised comes to pass, that The Master would kill Buffy and rise. This did, in a way, come true. She went into the Hellmouth to fight The Master and he bit her and left her to drown in a puddle while he roamed free. He wasn't counting on Xander and Angel showing up and Xander administering CPR to save Buffy. She died, but only for a second. The Master did enjoy one moment of freedom while Buffy was dead but she came back and killed him by sending him through a window and onto a broken piece of wood.

In the first episode of Season Two Buffy was suffering from the trauma of dying two months earlier when she fought The Master. During that time some vampires that were working for The Anointed One attempted the ressurect The Master using his bones. Buffy smashed them to bits and was rid of all her problems about being dead. He did return in the alternate universe Anyanka made for Cordy's wish. He had risen and was very powerful, even snapping Buffy's neck. Luckily, Giles smashed Anyanka's pendant returning everything to the master-less world.
