24 Hours of Oblivion Chapter 1

It hurt. The harsh morning sun invaded her room and began its painful assault on her eyes. She rolled over and looked at the clock- 5.30am- she still had an hour before her alarm went off.

"Ohhhh..." She pulled the pillow down on her head and tried to settle back asleep.
"Dammit! Stupid sun..."

She got out of bed she walked towards the window to open the blinds. As the invading sunlight came flooding past the shutters as she opened them a wave of expectancy came flooding over her. She began to smile as the air surrounding her buzzed with electricity. As her breath caught momentarily in her throat she knew that something would happen today. Maybe today he'd be back with her, they'd all be back. She couldn't help but feel that today her life would start again. She knew it..something was going to happen today. She opened the window and took a deep breath of air and thought about phoning the others. Remembering the time she decided against it and instead prayed out loud to the early morning sunrise.

"Come back to me Michael. Remember your promise and come back for me today."

Isabel Evans Whitman had felt something all night. She hadn't been able to sleep at all and instead had been looking at the sky. Something was going to happen but she couldn't place it. She'd had premonitions before but they had always come in the form of visions in her dreams. She had never felt anything as vague before. It was hard to describe but it left her with a nervous feeling because she had so little knowledge. It felt like apprehension but...from where? As the sun had rose she went over to the bed and smiled at the image of her husband lying there. She had never regretted her decision to stay with him, she was lucky she hadn't left or else he wouldn't have been here and the children would have been left orphans. She shuddered as she saw the scar on his abdomen. She had nearly lost him for good, she would never regret staying. As the sun invaded the room he lazily opened one eye only to see her staring down at him.

" 'Morning handsome."

He smiled as she stooped down to kiss him before budging his feet over so she could sit.

"Good morning Izzy. What time is it? Why are you up? Are you ok?"

"Its 6.30 and I'm fine I just couldn't sleep that great. I was just about to make breakfast and let you sleep on. But I couldn't resist waking you. You looked way too appealing."

"Hey don't worry about it Iz, you can wake me like that anyday. Of course.."

His eyes began to twinkle as he talked.

"If I'm that appealing then maybe you better come and take a closer look."

With that he pulled her down with him and they began to laugh gently as he kissed her. She returned his kiss passionately before gently pulling away.

"Sorry mister, no can do. I will not be responsible for you being late for work again. That stupid old bat already hates us enough. Maybe when we don't have any interruptions..."

"Okay, ok! <sigh> You're right I know you are. She is an old bat of a head teacher...but look on the bright-side, she must be reaching retirement age, then I can be as late as I want…"

he grinned.

"Yeah, retirement age for the second time.."

He began to laugh at his wife and began to get dressed. As Isabel walked out the room she woke the children up and headed for the kitchen. Alex came out of the room and down the hallway to see his wife and their two children having breakfast. He couldn't help but pinch himself to make sure it was real. He didn't deserve to be this happy.

"Alex, remember we have to see Maria later. I've got Amy to look after the kids."

He walked towards the table and gently kissed her as he grabbed a cup of coffee.

"I won't forget, 4 o'clock. I was thinking Isabel. I want to take you out tonight- a kinda "pre-anniversary" thing. Do you want to?"

She began to smile broadly, they had been married just under 9 years and he was still as romantic as he was when they first began to date.

"I'll ask Amy to take the kids over-night. You can pick me up about 8pm Mr Whitman."

"That's great. I'll see you at 8 o'clock Mrs Whitman, and please, dress formal."

"Why of course."

They both smiled at each other as Alex said goodbye to the kids. He walked over to Isabel and kissed her goodbye.

"I'll see you at 4. Bye beautiful. I love you."

"Bye Alex, love you too."

He went out the door and she sighed happily. Even though she was feeling blissfully happy the feeling of apprehension hadn't shifted. She was certain something was going to happen today, not necessarily something bad but something and she couldn't put her finger on it. She looked at her children who were making small talk with each other and smiled. Maybe Maria knew something. She said she needed to see them right away when she called yesterday and she called again this morning to make sure they were coming. Maybe something had happened. Maybe something was going to happen. Either way she decided, she'd know today.
