Do Not Tell Me

Do not tell me that you love me.
It's more than I can bear.
My heart is filled with apprehension
And memories of having once been there.

Do not tell me that you are sorry.
I've forgiven you too many times.
Your childish antics keep repeating,
And involving me in your love crimes.

Do not tell me that you are innocent,
Because you've broken me time and again.
The crimes you committed have hurt me
And stolen my trust from within.

Do not tell me I should trust you.
I cannot let you back into my life.
I've learned to live on my own again,
Now my life involves minimal strife.

Do not tell me I'm being selfish.
I've learned it's the way I must be.
I must take better care of myself first
Before I let someone else take care of me.

Do not tell me I'm lonely.
I'm learning about who I am.
Perhaps my true, one and only, love
Is awaiting me just around the bend.

Do not tell me I cannot accept love.
The next time I'll use better judgment.
The next time I'll listen to my heart,
And find true peace and contentment.
