Purpose: Compare what you see on a 16:9 DVDRip MPEG-2 to what's actually seen on a 4:3 TV
Movie: Men In Black 2
Editing done in: VirtualDub
Original Picture

[DVDRip.DivX 640 x 352]
1. Convert to SVCD resolution (480 x 480; kept at 640 x 640 to see it better).

2. Crop sides (in this case, 38 from left and right, 109 from top and bottom).

*Note* I first cropped the sides; they were the best references to look at on my TV, and not the tops and bottoms, which are the black bars.
*Note* I figured out how much to crop from the top and bottom by figuring out the resolution at 4:3.
3. Final product

Conclusions: I don't know why so much of the sides were cropped of when watching on a *STANDARD* TV. I don't know why SVCD resolution is so large either. I do know that there are some VCD groups that add black bars to the sides when encoding. They make them just large enough so that it's still cropped off by the TV. This way, you can actually see the entire picture.
