Variable Settings

Purpose: Compare DVD quality to SVCD quality

Movie: Swordfish
DVD and VCD viewed in: PowerDVD 4.0 XP
DVD to MPEG-2 tool: DVD2SVCD v1.1.0 build 1c
Input Settings: Everything was set to default, except the Bitrate. The movie was 99 minutes long, and the default was set to use 2 750MB CDs. I set it to 800MB, since that's what I had. Also, I used TMPGEnc, with 2pass VBR on High quality.

Comparison with Standard Sizes

1. Standard Size DVD ScreenShot (960 x 540) (NOT .AVI)

2. Standard Size SVCD ScreenShot (720 x 540)

Comparison with Similar Sizes

3. DVD ScreenShot: Cropped Black Bars, Shorted to match SVCD height WITHOUT Black Bars (Check #5)

4. DVD ScreenShot: Same as above, but STRETCHED horizontally to match SVCD width (Check #5)

5.SVCD ScreenShot: Cropped Black Bars (from #2).

Conclusion: Truely a superb tool, and it was SO damn easy to use. Only problem was the color was a bit too red. But that could be fixed somewhere in the settings. Also, from the screenshot above, the edges seem to be a little soft, but from the looks on my TV, it seemed to be a little too sharp. In any case, DVD2SVCD is the best tool by far, and it's just as easy as those one-step-programs, which it isn't. It takes a long time depending on how long the movie is, your computer speed, and the settings, as always.
