Parental advice is only as good as the comprehension skills of the child allow it to be. And blanket statements are sometimes so general that they do more harm than good. This is the exact reason that people should be more specific when relaying messages to their kids. They should also never refuse to answer any question until they hear all of it in order properly write it off as being a stupid kid question.
