Visitations Written By: Tom Fontana Directed By: Alex Zakrzewski Original Airdate: January 6, 2001 Oz is the property of Tom Fontana, Barry Levinson, Rysher Entertainment, Viacom, and HBO. (Hill narrating.) Hill: Oz. The name on the street for the Oswald State Correctional Facility, level 4. Oz is filled with murderers, rapists, racists, drug dealers, with the most common of criminals. But what is it that makes a man common? Better yet, what makes him unique? Winning wars? winning awards? No. What lifts a man out of the ordinary is who he loves. And who loves him. (Blue tinted shots of a sleepy truck driver drifting across the median. A School Bus swerves to miss the truck and rolls sideways down a hill, stopping on its side) (Cafeteria) Devlin: Today this great state of ours can once again stand proud. We have the finest, most modern correctional facility in the country. Let the word go forth to friend and foe alike, that we will spare no expense, no time, no effort in housing, and punishing the bottom feeders of out society. (Our Lady of Fatima) Mukada: Okay. Can I have your attention please? I'd like to welcome you all to Our Lady of Fatima parish. Now, I know that due to the recent renovations resulting from the gas explosion, visits to Oz have been severely limited, and this is going to be the first chance that many of you have had to visit your family members. (Unit B) McManus: When your name is called line up here. You'll be walking single file back to Emerald City. As you know, today's also the first visiting day in months. Many of you are anxious to be together with your families. So the quicker you follow instructions, the sooner you'll be together. Officer Murphy. Murphy: Number 96A214 Adams, Phillip. (our Lady of Fatima. As their names are called off, visitors get onto the school bus.) Mukada: Carrie Schillinger? Hello Carrie, how are you? How's Jewel today? Carrie Schillinger: Fine Thanks. Mukada: Eugenia Hill? Eugenia Hill: How are you Father? Mukada: I'm fine Mrs. Hill, how are you? Eugenia Hill: Excited to see my son. It's been way, way too long. Mukada: Of course. Sonsyrea Arif? Sonsyrea Arif: Asalaam aleikuum. Mukada: Annette Ozorio? Annette Ozorio: Right here. I'm coming. Coming. (to Mukada) You're cute. (Inmates walking down the hall from Gen pop to Em City) McManus: Let's go. Inmate: Wow. Inmate: Alright. Inmate: Look at this. (Our Lady of Fatima. The school bus loaded with Inmates Relatives pulls away) (Em City) Inmate: It's bigger. Arif: But not necessarily better. Inmate: I like the new color. Ryan O'Reily: It's the same color. Busmalis: I miss the old place. Rebadow: Don't be daft. McManus: Alright. Officer Murphy will now give out your cell assignments. Poet: I want a room with a view. Hill: And maid service. Murphy: Number 96A214 Adams, Phillip. Cell Number six. (Bus going down the highway) (Hill narrating) Hill: Over the course of history, many famous people have joined the infamous in prison. Extraordinary human beings with noble characters who, for one reason or another, ended up on the other side of the law. Take: (Hill standing, Dressed as Paine) Hill: Thomas Paine. He was arrested for treason. For fostering rebellion. Yet without his fiery writings America might never have been free. (Narration Pod) Hill: or Thomas More. (Hill dressed as More) Hill: The statesmen, the scholar, the saint, who was sent to the tower of London for being honest with his king. (Narration Pod) Hill: Mores' reward was to be beheaded. (Flashback to Cloutier being bricked up in a wall by Kirk and the bikers) Cloutier: Help! Help me! Help! Ahhh! (end flashback) (Cafeteria) Kirk: "And Sampson said unto his brethren, 'Now shall I be blameless when I do harm the Philistines.'" My friends, there are times when we are guilty for our actions and should be punished accordingly. But there are times when our actions, however cruel, leave us blameless. Congregation: Yeah...That's right. Kirk: Because we have punished the guilty! Congregation: Amen! Kirk: Now let us pray. Dear Lord, we ask you to continue the recovery of the reverend Jeremiah Cloutier who survived the gas explosion, (Flashback to a hack lighting a match and the kitchen exploding) Kirk: Which in turn freed him from the wall he'd been bricked up inside of. Lord we ask you to bless the reverend's journey today, as he comes back to Oz from the burn Unit at Benchley Memorial Hospital. Lord we also ask you to bless Jaz Hoyt, who took full responsibility for sealing Reverend Cloutier in the wall. (Cut to Hoyt in solitary, picking his nose) Kirk: (voiceover) Jaz is a good man Lord, who suffers needlessly in Solitary Confinement. Look down upon him Lord. Keep him strong. (Infirmary) McManus: Gloria. Has Cloutier arrived yet? Gloria: Yeah. McManus: Well I need to see him. Hoyt was in charge of building that kitchen wall, so I got him in solitary, but he won't say who else was involved, so I need Cloutier to tell me. Gloria: Well he can't. Not yet. His throat was damaged during the fire. He can hardly make any sounds at all. McManus: Is he conscious? Gloria: Occasionally. McManus: Then he can nod his fucking head yes or no when I read him a list of names. Where is he? Gloria: In the private room. Tim, wait. He was very badly burned during the explosion. I mean the fact that he survived at all is a miracle. McManus: Hallelujah. Gloria: I just want to prepare you for what you're going to see. (Private Room) (McManus pulls back a curtain to reveal a disfigured Cloutier) (Em City, Morales Pod) Guerra: You having any visitors come in today? Morales: Yeah. My sister Annette. Guerra: Nice. Morales: Yeah. She's a great gal. I love her to death. She's always been there for me when I needed her. I mean she's also a bit of a head case but... (Bus) Ozorio: Got a light? Mukada: Oh, no. There's no smoking. Ozorio: Scootch over. I want to sit down. I hope you didn't mind, when I got on the bus, me flirting with you. Mukada: No...I just... Ozorio: You know, because I know how you priests don't go in for girls. Oh no! Mukada: Well you know actually we- Ozario: I'm sorry. That came out wrong. I mean, You swear to God you'll never have sex. Mukada: Uh...well yes but... Ozorio: Do you know my brother? Mukada: Sure. He comes to Mass every Sunday. Ozorio: Enrique? At Mass? Jesus he must be bored out of his mind. Oh no! that came out wrong. I'm sure you give a very cheery sermon, Father. I mean, my brothers not like, of the church going variety. Mukada: Well I've got to admit that most of the guys come just because they want to break the monotony. Ozorio: I haven't seen Enrique in...3 years. Been in South Beach. Mukada: What were you doing down there? Ozorio: Bartending. Mostly. You know I tried to go for some modeling jobs because I got a good figure, but I wasn't willing to play the games. You know what I'm saying. Mukada: Yeah I think I do. The guys try to take advantage huh? Ozorio: Exactly. Which is why I need to talk to Enrique, because one certain guy took too much advantage. My fucking husband. Mukada: He hurt you? (Ozorio removes a bandage on her arm, revealing a large gash) Ozorio: I loved that Cuban cocksucker with all of my heart and he cuts a chunk out of me. I need Enrique to talk to (Spanish. Possibly 'Javier'?) Mukada: To call him? From Oz? Ozorio: My brothers voice travels far. He don't need a phone if you know what I'm saying. Mukada: No. Please don't tell me anymore. Ozorio: You're a priest. You can't say nothing to nobody. Mukada: No that's only during confession. We're not in a confessional. We're on a bus. Ozorio: Oh don't get so technical. Mukada: Annette what your about to ask your brother is wrong. Ozorio: Bullshit. Look at my arm. Mukada: I didn't say that what your husband did was right. I'm just saying that...that...that's not going to solve that problem. Ozorio: Fuck you. You self-righteous jizz ball. You don't know dick about dick and that came out exactly the way I meant it. (solitary) Hack: Listen up. When I give the order, you are to walk from your cell and form a single line. Step out. Pender: Hey, what's going on? Hack: No talking. (cafeteria) Hoyt: Holy shit. Inmate: New. And improved. Hack: Not talking. Glynn: Okay. During the reconstruction we found out that there are problems with the air ducts throughout the building. We need to clean out the ducts in solitary and so, until that job is complete, I'm going to put you all back into Gen-Pop. Hoyt: Heeeeeey. Hack: (hits Alvarez) No talking. Alvarez: I didn't say shit. Glynn: Now this is a second chance for you slugs. If you behave yourself over the next few days, you won't have to return to solitary. Understood? Don't fuck this opportunity up. White: What exactly is the problem with the air duct? Glynn: That's none of your concern White. White: What air duct? That's the air we breathe right? You talking about- Hack: (Hits White) What part of "no talking" don't you understand? White: Shit! Damn man I got a constitutional right to breathe fresh air man. Hack: oh, yeah? White: You know...I mean...fucking duct.... Hack: Breathe, brother, breathe. (Prisoners from Solitary enter Em city) Mineo: Whoa. Where are you going? White: To see McManus. Mineo: He ain't here. Get back in line. (Showers) Guerra: Welcome home Miguel. Been hoping and praying for this day. We got unsettled business, you and me. Alvarez: Oh yeah? Guerra: You killed my boys. Carlo Ricardo and Jorge Vasquez . You got to pay. Alvarez: Spit. Sweat. Blood. Guerra: What? Alvarez: Bodily fluids. Fluids the body produces. Piss and tears. Some voluntary. Some not so voluntary. When I was in my cubby hole, you know, I had alot of time to think about my fluids. My juices, you know. My shit. Guerra: You're fucking nuts Alvarez. Alvarez: Yes, very. That's right, it's me I'm fucking nuts. You say I got to pay? Fine. Put this on my tab okay? (punches Guerra) (Hacks arrive) Murphy: Hey what the fuck's going on in here? Guerra: We're taking showers. Murphy: With your clothes on? Up against the wall. Come on move it. Alvarez: What? Me too? Murphy: (pulls off Alvarez's towel) Nah. I can see you're clean. (Another hack finds a shank on one of the inmates.) Murphy: Alright. Confine these two dinks to their cells. Put Guerra in the cage. Come on move it. Got anything else to say Alvarez? Alvarez: Man is 80% Water! (Gym) Morales: Hey Miguel. You are one lucky fuck. Alvarez: Yeah. That's me you know. I'm Mr. Lucky. Morales: You know, Guerra wants you dead. But I could yank him off your ass. Alvarez: Oh yeah? If I do what huh? If I kill somebody for you? Those days are gone Chica. Those days are long gone. See I got no interest in s niffing the butt hole. Morales: You won't survive solo. You ain't got the balls. Alvarez: Ain't got what? Morales: Balls. Cahones. Bendahos. That's what I'm saying. Alvarez: Oh. (More Spanish) You see this (points to the scar on his face) I did that. Morales: Yeah? Alvarez: Yeah. I cut my own face. You know what I'm saying? I shoved a shank in Rivera's eyes. You know what I'm saying? I slit Vasquez's throat. You know what I'm saying? I handle a knife better then a fucking surgeon. I got nothing to prove to you brother. Nothing. Come on! Get the fuck out of my face! Hey Giles. Don't think I've forgotten about you sticking me right? (Grabs Giles) Little fucking cocksucker. Yeah! Yeah! (Giles head butts Alvarez, then stands up and punches him in the face) (McManus's office) McManus: This incident with Giles concerns me Alvarez. You want to stay out of solitary you've got to stay out of trouble. Alvarez: You and me both know that I'm going back to solitary no matter what I do. Glynn's not going to let me run around free. And even if you did convince him too I'm doomed you know. I attract trouble like a fucking magnet. You know what quicksilver is? McManus: Quicksilver? Alvarez: Yeah. McManus: Yeah. It's like Mercury right? The stuff they make mirrors with. Alvarez: Mirrors. Yeah. Reflections right? It's just this whole change in mood, you know what I'm saying? I mean that's just me man! That's me McManus. you know I'm just...I'm quicksilver man. Whoosh, you know. (Em City) White: Hey Guerra. You know you look like a gorilla I seen one time in the fucking Bronx zoo. Guerra: Fuck you. you better hope they don't let me out of here soon White because your fucking black ass is mine. Mother fucker. White: Woooo. Hey! Anybody got a banana I can feed to the fucking ape? McManus: Omar. White: There you are. I been waiting to see you. May I step forward please? McManus: Alright yeah. White: I know I'm always saying I'm sorry for all this nonsense I keep getting sucked into. Kicking you and stabbing you and shit. McManus: What man? White: When the hacks told me I was coming back to Em City, I said McManus is the man, son. I mean he got a heart as big as... I don't know what's as big as your heart. McManus: Alright. White: No no no! waitwaitwait, I know what I'm saying- McManus: Don't fucking touch me. White: I'm not saying the right words. Look I'm going to make good this time, I promise. McManus: You know I'm glad that your willing to make another effort, but I got to ask you a question. Why the fuck did you get so upset with me? Why'd you kick me in the head? White: Look you know...There I am sitting there watching TV right? And there you come up on the screen big as day, right? And Guerra...Fucking Guerra! He started making fun. That's how the fight got started. McManus: Fuck I know all this shit. Why did you fucking attack me? White: Because you did say nothing to me man! McManus: About what? White: About being a contestant on fucking 'Up your Ante'. I mean here I thought we were getting all friendly. You know. We shared our thoughts and feelings. And then I got to find out you on the TV the same time as all the rest of them fucks! McManus: Oh. White: As a matter of fact, you sort of owe me an apology. McManus: Me? Apologize to you? White: Uh-huh. Murphy: Work Detail! McManus: Go to work Omar. (Cafeteria) White: Here you go Burr. Hot and tasty. Redding: I appreciate it. Inmate: Maricon. White: Stupid fucking spics. Redding: Don't worry. You are going to get your chance to hack up Chico Guerra soon enough. White: That's just the thing man. I'm tired...I don't want to hack anybody up anymore. I'm really really really trying. I'm trying to keep it on the straight and narrow. On the up and up you know what I'm saying. Inmate: Hey. Estupido. White: Hey. Tamale boy. Why don't you shut your fucking mouth? Inmate: What? Guerra's not the gorilla. You are. (White attacks the inmate and the hacks break it up) Hack: Get him out! Inmate: Black bitch nigger mother fucker! I'm going to fucking get you! Hack: Sit down! Inmate: You bitch! (Em City. Guerra is removed to from the cage, White is put in) Guerra: What'd you say about a banana? (Hill Narrating) Hill: Back in the day before the day, explorers would set out on ships to discover new worlds. (Hill dressed as Polo and Columbus) Hill: Adventurers like Marco Polo and Christopher Columbus would sail into the horizon, not sure if they'd find a place to land, or fall off the edge of the earth. As a result or their journeys, both Polo and Columbus got fame, fortune, and a pair of leg irons. (Narration Pod) Hill: That's right. The man who "discovered America" was a con. Arrested for embezzlement. After a few months in a dank dirty dungeon, I bet old Chris started wishing he had fallen off the edge of the Earth. (Bus) Carrie Schillinger: Thanks Father. Mukada: She was giggling. Carrie Schillinger: She's excited to see her grandpa. We had the blood test done you know. Hank was definitely the dad. Mukada: I heard. Carrie Schillinger: Yeah. I just want Mr. Schillinger to be there for Jewel you know? I mean we don't have anyone else. Mukada: What about your parents? Carrie Schillinger: My folks are back in Montana. They don't give two shits about Jewel and me. Mukada: Maybe in time Carrie. Carrie Schillinger: Maybe. Video Games. Mukada: I beg your pardon? Carrie Schillinger: Hank played video games. All day and into night. Video games and videos. He watched that 'Natural Born Killers' like 60 times. I just think that...You know maybe if he hadn't he'd still be alive. Mukada: I don't think it's that simple Carrie. Hank's upbringing, family life, education...They all had a lot to do with making him who he was. Carrie Schillinger: Can you bless my baby father? Can you take away the curse that's on her head? Mukada: Curse? Carrie Schillinger: The one that killed Hank and his brother. The one that put Mr. Schillinger in Oz. I just want my girl to be happy you know? Have a happy life. Mukada: Alright. I'll say a prayer. (Infirmary) Schillinger: Can't wait to see my Granddaughter. Robson: Christ. You going to get all mushy again? Poet: Grub boys. Schillinger: Who the fuck you calling boy? Poet: Ohhh I'm sorry there Schillinger. I know your having a rough recovery and all. Don't want to say nothing to loosen up them stitches. Hey hey. Robson: What'd you do? Serve everybody else in this fucking prison then bring us the shit leftovers? Poet: Robson. You been in Oz all this time and now you going to be a food critic huh? Wooo you're scary. Wooo. Robson: We got to get back to Gen-Pop. I'm going to go stir crazy. Schillinger: Dr. Nathan says we're at full speed. Robson: It's time to take down Kareem Said. Schillinger: That fucking nigger is going to live to regret shanking us. Them Muslims got what they call a jee-had. Holy war. Well they aint seen was like what's coming. Robson: Jee-had? Yeehah! Hack: You want to go to the hole? Robson: You can't put me in the hole. I'm recuperating. Schillinger: Heathcare's a bitch. (Hole) McManus: Thank you. Said. Said. Look the warden has decided to charge you with attempted murder for stabbing Robson and Schillinger. You want me to arrange for a public defender? Said: No. McManus: You intend to represent yourself? Said: No. I intend to plead guilty (Staff Meeting) McManus: Said's in a dark and ugly place. Glynn: Why should he be any different then anyone else in Oz? McManus: Since he killed Adebisi I've watched him become more and more angry. Violent. This thing with Robson and Schillinger is just one more piece in a long decline. Sister Pete: He was defending Tobias Beecher. McManus: I'm not debating his motives Pete. Just his methods. The old Said would have never resorted to violence. At least not as a first step. Dr. Nathan: Well I'm releasing Robson and Schillinger today. McManus: Oh great. Howell: Can't you keep them in the ward longer? Dr. Nathan: No. Their wounds have healed and I need the beds. Howell: Then give them a little Valium, some Prozac. Anything that will keep them calm. Dr. Nathan: Why not medicate everybody? Howell: Okay. Glynn: Listen up. I'm not going to take any shit from the Arians or the Muslims. I intend to tell them so. I want everyone in the cafeteria at 3:00. (Cafeteria. Said is released from the hole and welcomes by the Muslims. Robson and Schillinger are released from the Infirmary and are greeted by the Aryans.) (Em City) Robson: Don't you want your mail Kareem? (Said Opens his mail and finds human excreament. He tips the mail cart over and attacks Robson.) Hack: Get the fuck back! (Sister Pete's office) Sister Pete: Hey Tobias. What do you think of the office? Beecher: It's very snazzy. Sister Pete: Yeah. Beecher: And they finally upgraded my computer. I've got 128 Megabytes of Ram. Sister Pete: How is Said? Beecher: Seems fine. Sister Pete: There's concern among the staff about the Muslims and Aryans. Beecher: For good reason. Sister Pete: In the shower this morning, I had a though. About you. Beecher: You were thinking about me while you were naked in the shower? Sister Pete: Oh boy. You and Said are friends. And you and Schillinger were getting along, at least until he heard about your possible parole. What if I could organize an interaction between Schillinger, Said, and you? If you can broker a peace between these two, you save allot of lives. And when you're up for parole again at the end of the year... Beecher: I'll smell even sweeter. Sister Pete: Yeah. Beecher: Imagine that. Said, Schillinger, and me in a three-way. (Unit B) Schillinger: No. Absolutely not. I'm not going anywhere near Said. Sister Pete: Vern... Schillinger: My people don't associate with his kind. Sister Pete: Yet you already have. Like when you asked Said to represent you in your conspiracy to commit murder trial. Schillinger: That was different. Sister Pete: How? Schillinger: He hadn't shanked me then. Sister Pete: That is exactly why the two of you have to sit down together and that's why Tobias Beecher has to be there. Vern. Remember when you came to me? Wanting to make sense of your life so that you could find some peace of mind, some happiness? This is the same. You'll be able to express whatever it is you're truly feeling inside. Schillinger: What I feel inside...is rage. Sister Pete: But you're smart enough to know that there's no comfort in rage. Rage feeds off the soul until there is no soul left. (Em City. Beecher watches Sister Pete talk to Said) Pender: I call. Beecher I call. Beecher: Huh? Pender: You want to play cards or you want to dick around? Beecher: I'm out. Pender: Ah shit. Busmalis: My deal right? Pender: Yes. Rebadow: Is something going on Tobias? Beecher: This is Oz Bob. There's always something going on. 216. Bob: What's that? Beecher: The number of days until my next parole hearing. Pender: Two matches. Beecher, I bet two. Are you in or out? (Sister Pete leaves Said, giving Beecher a thumbs up) Beecher: I am in. (Interaction Room) Sister Pete: Okay good. Sit down gentlemen. Sit down. Sit down. I spoke to the three of you individually to explain what I hope we can accomplish here. I know there's a lot of skepticism on your part, and so I appreciate your giving this a try. Said: We must always choose life over death. Schillinger: Hey, you're the one who shanked me in the back, pal. Sister Pete: Kareem, Vern, please. You know the rules. Each of you will get a chance to speak. First, I want to hear from Tobias. Beecher: Yeah. I do feel a certain responsibility for what happened that day in the library. You were happy that my parole got turned down. Given all the shit that's gone on between us, I can understand that. You caught him and Robson in my face, threatening me, and you wanted to help. I can appreciate that too. So, you were both justified, mostly, in the way you behaved. Schillinger: Question. Sister Pete: Go ahead. Schillinger: Beecher, would I have been justified shanking Said? Said: I wouldn't have been taunting him. Sister Pete: Kareem! Beecher: Do you mean If the circumstances were reversed and Said was threatening me? Schillinger: Uh-huh. Beecher: Yes, I think you'd have been justified stabbing him. Schillinger: Horseshit. Beecher: Here's why. And, you're going to want to have Sister Pete send me to the state asylum when you hear this one. You two are exactly alike. Said: What?! Schillinger: You are crazy. Sister Pete: Listen to him. Beecher: You are both powerful men. Not only natural born leaders but each of you has a vision of the world and even though those visions are in direct opposition, they do share something in common. Schillinger: Like what? Beecher: You both believe in your people. In the rights of your people and the God-given gifts owed to your people. You both believe your people deserve a full life. Happiness... Security.. and...I don't know. I guess that's all I have to say. Sister Pete: That's good. That's...That's enough for today. I think we should think about what Tobias said and...Come back tomorrow Officer. (Hill Narrating with Naked Inmates behind him) Hill: Rapists, pedophiles, male hustlers. We got all kinds of men in Oz. Men have turned sex into a crime and for that they belong in the deepest recesses of out hell. But as we also know, sex is not necessarily love, and there are times when love itself will get you incarcerated. Like Oscar Wilde, (Hill dressed as Wilde) Hill: who loved, and lost two years of his life sitting in Reading Jail. Two lips. Maybe a little tongue pressed against two other lips. A simple kiss can be more lethal then a gun. (Bus) Sonsyrea Arif: Addiction is Satan's tool. His evil system to keep out people down. He supplies the drugs to out men and woman and then arrests them for using. He locks our sons and daughters in his prisons and then walks away, a smile across his white face. Mukada: Mrs. Arif? I hate too... Some of the other passengers have asked me to ask you if you could keep your voice down. Sonsyrea Arif: Why? Because they don't want to hear the truth? The drug policy in this country is excessive, oppressive, and racist. Mukada: Be that as it may- Sonsyrea Arif: Instead of locking young black men behind bars we ought to implement substance abuse treatment, which is less expensive and more productive. Mukada: Well I agree, but now's not the time- Sonsyrea Arif: When is the time? Did you know that the number of inmates in American Prisons has more then tripled in the last 20 years? Mukada: Yes. Sonsyrea Arif: Did you know that if the inmate population continues to grow exponentionaly by they year 2053 the United States will have more people in prison that out. So I ask you Father, how long to we wait to change the way things are? Mukada: Her baby's trying to sleep. Eugenia: Your husband's a drug addict? Sonsyrea Arif: He was, until he found Allah. Eugenia: My son Augustus, he was too. Sonsyrea Arif: 70% of those arrested test positive for substance abuse. Eugenia: Mrs. Arif- Sonsyrea Arif: Sonsyrea. Eugenia: Sonsyrea. Your heads all crammed with facts and figures. But a cold hard fact is never as good as a simple truth. Your husband. Did he hurt you and your children while he was addicted? Sonsyrea Arif: Yeah. He became a thief. Euginia: And now? Sonsyrea Arif: He struggled and he struggled and he fought his cravings. With the help of Allah he is clean. Euginia: And your children? Sonsyrea Arif: They miss their father. But they are blossoming. Euginia: Then girl, that's the story you ought to be telling. That's the stuff people need to hear. (Cafiteria) Inmate: You're in a good mood today. Arif: Yeah, man. My wife's coming to see me. Inmate: Alright. Is the bringing your children? Arif: Nah. Sonsyrea and I need some time, just the two of us. O'Reily. That man is an animal. (Flashbacks to O'Reily killing Patrick Keenan) Arif: He murdered Patrick Keenan with such brutality, every time I see him I wonder how he lives with himself. Ryan O'Reily: How you doing? Eat up Arif. Move it. Hey. Take over here a second alright? Poet: Where the fuck is you going man? Ryan O'Reily: Hey hey hey hey! Stanton: O'Reily, relax. I haven't seen your brother since he checked out of protective custody, we just catching up man, come on. Ryan O'Reily: I don't want you anywhere near him. Cyril O'Reily: But Ryan. I like Henry. Ryan O'Reily: I told you this guys a scum bag. Stanton: It takes one too know one. Ryan O'Reily: You on some kind of Kamikaze mission there Stanton huh? If I see you talking to Cyril again you're going down in flames. Stanton: Later. Ryan O'Reily: What'd you say to him? Cyril O'Reily: Nothing. Nothing! Jeez. Pancomo: Hey you Mick fucks. We're working over here. You want to join us? (Wardens Office) Arif: You know, I agonized and agonized over telling you I saw Ryan O'Reily murder Patrick Keenan. But finally minister Said convinced me to step forward and yet O'Reilys never been charged. Glynn: That's because I haven't been able to gather any concrete evidence against him. At this point all I have is your testimony and you won't even speak publicly. Or have you changed your mind? Arif: If I do O'Reily will have me killed. Glynn: Well don't expect miracles. Arif: You know I've been going over and over that moment in my mind, trying to remember every detail. And this might be important, I don't know, but I think I saw O'Reily pull a shamrock off of Keenan's neck. (Flashback to O'Reily taking the shamrock) Glynn: A shamrock. Arif: Yes. A gold shamrock on a chain. Glynn: I see. Arif: Don't let this slide Warden. Justice must be done. O'Reily must be punished. (Infirmary) Dr. Nathan: Uh-uh. Stay back. Ryan O'Reily: But I've got a pain. Dr. Nathan: Where? Ryan O'Reily: In my heart. I'm heart sick 'cause you keep ignoring me. Dr. Nathan: I'm busy Ryan. Ryan O'Reily: I just want to know, did the medical board...Did they rule on your case? For malpractice? Dr Nathan: Yes. They reprimanded me. They fined me, but I'm still a Doctor. Ryan O'Reily: Well that's...that's great right? Glynn: Gloria? May I see you? Dr. Nathan: Sure. Glynn: Let's walk. (Hallway) Glynn: Whoever killed Patrick Keenan took a gold chain from around his neck. A shamrock. At one point when we spoke you had a shamrock in you hand. Dr. Nathan: It was his. Glynn: Where'd you get it? Dr. Nathan: Arrived one day in my office in as unmarked envelope. Glynn: When I interviewed you about they murder why didn't you tell me you had evidence? Dr. Nathan: Leo. I was raped. After a trauma like that your not always thinking clearly. There are things that I've done since that night that make no sense. Just when I think I've got my feelings under control the slightest thing sets me off. Glynn: I know. And I'm sorry. Dr. Nathan: Honestly, there's a part of me that's happy Keenan's dead. I just want to put his face behind me. Glynn: Of course. Gloria one last question, and I promise I'll never bring it up again. Where's the necklace now? (Flashback to Dr. Nathan giving the necklace to Ryan O'Reily) Dr. Nathan: I threw the fucking thing away. (Interview Room) Ryan O'Reily: Come on Warden. There got to be a rule about the number of times you can keep on asking me the same questions. Glynn: You think I'm screwing with your civil rights? You want to consult an attorney? Ryan O'Reily: I don't need an attorney cause I didn't kill Keenan. Look man, check the assignment records. I wasn't near the gym all day. Glynn: My informant says different. Ryan O'Reily: Your informants a liar. Glynn: Why would he lie? Ryan O'Reily: Look. Allot of people got issues with me. A lot of people had issues with Keenan. That kid was a scrapper, he was in fights all the time. You go through the files you'll find a shit load of suspects. Glynn: I have. You're still the nearest, and the dearest. Take him out. (Computer Room) Meaney: Glynn really wants to nail you for Keenan's murder huh? Ryan O'Reily: He's got some witness only I don't know who. If I could only find out this fuckers name then I could persuade him to change his testimony. Or- Meaney: Kill him? Ryan O'Reily: Yeah. Well. In any case, I need to confuse the situation. Meaney: Yeah. How? (Ryan shows Meaney a news paper clipping of Dr. Nathan) Ryan O'Reily: This clipping? needs to find its' way into Henry Stanton's trunk. Buried underneath his underwear. Meaney: Meanwhile, what are you going to be doing? Ryan O'Reily: Encouraging an entirely different eyewitness to step forward. (Flashback to a base ball game a drunk Montgomery runs the bases) Umpire: You're out! Montgomery: Fuck you! (Montgomery hit's the umpire over the head with a baseball bat. End flashback) Hill: Prisoner Number 99m663. Martin Montgomery. Convicted March 16th, two counts of assault in the 1st. Sentence: 8 years. Up for parole in 5. (Cafeteria) Ryan O'Reily: Hey, Marty my boy, how about another piece of cake. Montgomery: Sure. Thanks. O'Reily right? Ryan O'Reily: That's right. Montgomery: How come you're offering me extra cake? I been here almost 3 years you never even farted in my direction. Ryan O'Reily: Well you right. We're not friends. Everybody knows we're not friends. Which is why I can offer you an evicting money making opportunity. Montgomery: Which is what? Ryan O'Reily: I want you to go to the warden and tell him you saw Henry Stanton murder Patrick Keenan. Montgomery: But I didn't. Ryan O'Reily: Marty, there's alot more cake where that came from. (Wardens Office) Montgomery: Stanton caught Keenan with a barbell right about here. Keenan went down. Stanton ripped the necklace from his throat. Glynn: What happened next? Montgomery: I ran. I mean what? I'm going to stick around? Glynn: Alright. Thanks for coming forward. Montgomery: Like I said, my conscience couldn't take the strain of keeping what I saw inside. Glynn: I'll be damned. Normally nobody rats on anybody. Now I have two different witnesses identifying to different suspects for the same murder. Mills: But Montgomery had alot more details then Arif. Specific details. Glynn: Yeah. And according to the records Stanton and Keenan were constantly fighting. But why would Arif lie? Mills: Ask him. Glynn: No. I'm going to have a word with Henry Stanton. (Interview Room) Stanton: Me? Kill Patrick Keenan? I wish. Glynn: At least twice in Unit B Keenan kicked the shit out of you. Stanton: That ain't true. I got my licks in. Glynn: Medical Report. Says after the first fight you had to broken ribs, a broken wrist. Keenan had no injuries at all. Stanton: Mine was a moral victory. Glynn: That day in the gym. You whacked him didn't you Stanton? Stanton: No. I swear on my children no. (Glynn Holds up the newspaper clipping of Dr. Nathan) Glynn: We found this in your cell. Stanton: I never seen this before. Glynn: You're obsessed with Dr. Nathan aren't you? Stanton: No. I mean she has nice tits and all but other then that I never even think of her. Glynn: Take him to the hole. Stanton: The hole?! Why?! Glynn: Maybe a few days in there will jostle your membrane. (The Hole) Stanton: Fuck you! Fuck you! Fuck you, you mother fuck! (Receiving and discharge) Arif: Warden. How's the investigation? Glynn: Fine. Arif: When are you going to charge O'Reily? Glynn: Let me ask you something. Why are you so hell bent on Ryan O'Reily going down? Arif: As I said. Justice must be done. Glynn: Uh-huh. There's no other reason? No other agenda? Arif: No. Glynn: There's no payback for some wrong done to you? Arif: No. Glynn: I've been digging around. During the riots you and O'Reily almost came to blows. Arif: The Riot? That was 5 years ago. Glynn: In my experience, cons have long memories. Arif: You think I made this story up? Glynn: You know what? At this point I don't know. And I'm beginning to wonder if I ever care. (Em City) Meaney: Ready for this? Glynn suspended the investigation into the murder of Patrick Keenan. Too many suspects and not enough clues. Ryan O'Reily: Perfect. Meany: Bet you could press it. Bet you could get Stanton convicted. Ryan O'Reily: Don't want to. Meany: Why? Ryan O'Reily: Look. Henry Stanton gets the death penalty for Keenan's murder, Gloria Nathan's not going to let an innocent mad die. She's going to feel compelled to tell the truth. No, I win by keeping the ball in play. By keeping the facts murky. (Ryan Gives Meaney the shamrock) Ryan O'Reily: Have that placed in Marty Montgomery's cell. Meany: Montgomery? Why? Ryan O'Reily: Life insurance. Cyril O'Reily: Can I tell Henry our secret? That we fooled the Warden? Ryan O'Reily: No Cyril for Christ's sake don't say a fucking word to him! Cyril O'Reily: Stop Yelling. Why do you always yell? Like Papa. Ryan O'Reily: fuck off. (Hill Narrating, Dressed as Galileo) Hill: Galileo gallantly challenged the principal that had been excepted for over a thousand years., that the Earth was the center of the Universe. That everything revolved around us. The mad monks and the inquisition imprisoned Galileo and ordered him to repute his theory. Which he did. How much worse of a punishment is there than being forced to say that what you know to be true is a lie? (Bus) Eugenia Hill: I see that bay over there and I can't help but think about Augustus when he was just born. When he took his first step. You know you think back and say 'If I'd done this' or 'if that hadn't happened' his whole life might have been different. Sonsyrea Arif: Allah guides out every step. Eugenia Hill: I know. God is my rock, but he can't stop the thoughts from flooding my head, the memories from flowing. Augustus's first suit. His first day of school. Oh, his wedding day. He looked so happy. He and Annabella both did. The sun was shinning so bright, I had to squint my eyes as they drove away. And now...I feel like I lost him that day. In more ways then one. His...His world got narrower. You know, with the drugs and all. Sonsyrea Arif: Is he still using? Eugenia Hill: Oh no, thank God. My boy's been clean over three years. I'm very proud of him for that. Sonsyrea Arif: Yes indeed. Eugenia Hill: That's why I'm worried. That's why today is going to be so hard. I...I've got some news to tell him. Bad news. News that I want him to hear from me first because maybe if I can just cushion the blow, he won't go back to the crack. His wife, Annabella, she's divorcing him. Sonsyrea Arif: Oh, my. Eugenia Hill: I tried talking to the girl, but her minds made up. She's got another fellow and....she wants to be free. And yet, God help me, I can't stop blaming her for the darkness in Augustus's life. She was with him the night he shot the policeman. The night his spine got snapped. She should have taken better care of my son. Sonsyrea Arif: Eugenia? Eugenia Hill: I'm fine, I'm fine. I'm fine. These tears are for Augustus. My little Emperor. Locked up in a cell, down in that wretched place. Half his body dead. And damn. All I keep thinking about is his first step. (Em City) Hill: Yo Burr. How come you don't never get in line? Redding: Cause ain't nobody sending me nothing. Poet: You see this? Motherfuckers want me to donate money to the 'United Negro College Fund'. You got to be kidding me. Hill: Fuck. it's a letter from some lawyer. My wife's divorcing me. Poet: It's a surprise? Hill: Nah. I guess not. I mean...No. No. I mean she been visiting me less and less and you know when she does come there's...there's definitely a distance. Redding: Well what do you expect? You've been cooped up in here over 7 years. That's a long time for a young gal to keep a candle lit. Hill: I know. It's just that... you know we loved each other. The least Annabella could have done was come and say goodbye. Poet: It's tough luck Augustus man. Tough fucking luck. Redding: You'll survive son. You survived this shithole, you'll survive a divorce. Hill: Maybe. It's.. like losing her. It's like giving up my last piece of hope. Its like admitting to myself that everything I had out there is gone. Its gone forever. Redding: You know, I never told you this, but Dee and I was fixing to divorce too. Hill: What? Redding: Just before she got sick. Course after she got sick, I couldn't leave her then. Hill: I though you and Dee was happy. You always seemed so happy Redding: That was the vodka. The only woman I knew that could drink more liquor than me. That love in her eyes was always a little bit blurry. No. You and your moms was the only real family I ever knew. Hill: She's coming today. Redding: Eugenia. Hill: Maybe you and me could visit mom together. Redding: You know, I'd like that. I'd like to see Eugenia. She always had the sweetest pair of eyes. (The Bus goes down the highway. Background Music plays, almost drowning out all the other sounds) Mukada: Alright. Looks like we're going to be at the main gate of Oswald in about five minutes. (A Semi drifts over the median. The Bus swerves to miss it and rolls down a hill, stopping on its side. A bloody Mukada climbs out a side window.) (OZ cafeteria. Music continues to play as Glynn tells several inmates of the accident, and that most of the passengers were killed, including Sonsyrea Arif, Eugenia Hill, Annette Ozorio, and Carrie Schillinger) Schillinger: What about my Granddaughter? Jewel Schillinger? Glynn: She's at Benchley memorial. Stable condition. (Hill narrating) Hill: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Lots of fine people have sat staring at the inside of prison walls. Socrates, Gandhi, Joan of ark. Even our Lord Jesus Christ. He spent the last night of his life, not with Holy men, but with scum, like the kind we got in Oz. One of the last things Jesus did on Earth was invite a prisoner to join him in Heaven. He loved the criminal. ' I say he loved that criminal. Loved that criminal as much as he loved anyone.' It takes a lot to love a sinner. But the sinner? He needs it all the more.
