Brendan Fraser sets the stage in The Mummy and The Mummy Returns as adventurer Rick O'Connel, a member of the French Forgein Legion. He is outfitting in Hamanuptra, City of the Dead, where a group called the Medjai lead by Adreth Bay is watching over Imhotep. Three years later Rick is captured and is intended to be hanged by a local prison, but is saved by Evelyn Carnahan because she wants to go to Hamanuptra to look for the book of Amun Ra. Along the way Rick's obnoxious friend Beni tags along with some Americans who steal sacred canopic jars and end up getting sucked dry by Imhotep. Then, later, after unleasing Imhotep, Rick sets out on a quest to save Evie whom Imhotep has captured and to kill Imhotep before he can destroy the world.
