Miantonomo
(1565?-1643)
Native American chief. He succeeded
his uncle Canonicus as chief of the Narragansett
tribe in 1636.
Miantonomo
was friendly with the colonists of Massachusetts and
Connecticut and helped them in the war against the
Pequot tribe in 1637. He
signed the tripartite treaty for perpetual peace between
his tribe, the Connecticut colonists, and the Mohegan
tribe in 1638, but violated it in a war against the
Mohegan in 1643.
He
was defeated and captured by Uncas,
the Mohegan chief, and taken to Boston, where he was
tried by a committee of clergymen. Sentenced to be
executed by Uncas, he was killed where he had been
defeated, near the present site of Norwich, Connecticut.
