The Fairy Queens
Here
are some famous fairies from European myth:
|
Aeval
|
fairy
queen of Munster (Ireland). When the men of the district
were said to be failing to satisfy their women, Aeval
held a fairy court. The women invited discussed the
issues and decided that men needed to be more open and
inventive about sex. |
|
Banshees
|
are
fairies that warn of approaching death but one banshee
leader in the second century is said to have arrived
at Samhain (about Halloween)
and taken Fingin MacLuchta, King of Munster, to see
the fairies' board of treasure. |
|
Nos
Bonnes Mères
|
(Our
Good Mothers) are the fairies on the east coast of Brittany. |
|
The
Corrigan
|
are
said to be Druids who were
turned into fairies and swap fairy children for human
ones. Many people believe in changelings until fairly
recently. We still speak of a 'bad seed.' |
|
Melusine
|
was
the daughter of a water goddess (Pressina) who turned
Melusine into a serpent for attacking her father. Melusine
is shown with a serpent's tail on the gingerbread cakes
stamped with her image still sold by the bakers of cakes
for the May Fair held near Lusignan (near Poitiers,
France). |
