After you finish building your site, or are nearly done, you'll want people to be able to see your work. How do people find your website when there are millions of other sites on the internet?
Signing Guestbooks
Signing guestbooks is a major way a lot of people get hits to their websites. You post your name, your email address, and your link to your homepage, and leave a note for the webmaster or webmistress. You can comment on their site or be sort of nice IF YOU CAN.. One thing you should not do is say something like: "Wow! Nice site! Please visit mine if you have the time! I've been working really hard on it, and I think you'll like it!" Guestbooks are not for advertising your site, I can't stress this enough! Leave comments, not advertising! If you leave a kinda nice if you can i doubt it comment, the owner of the site may come and pay you a visit. Also, other people who read the guestbook may click on your link.
Linking People
You may be wondering how this one works. How would linking to another person get you hits? Well, this one is simple. When you link a person who has a counter on their page, they will be able to look at a list of referers. If they see that someone from your address has linked them, they may go to your site, and read some of your info. If they really like your site, they may even link you back!
Cliques
A lot of people don't know what Internet Cliques are, so here is a brief explanation. You can visit clique sites that are like little clubs. You read the rules, put a code on your page, and are added to a members list. Some people will explore the list, especially if they are high on the list. This wont give you an explosion of hits or anything, but it'll add a few. Same goes with webrings!
Search Engines
If you submit your site to a search engine, you can get lots of potential visitors. Submit to several search engines, but don't do this all the time. Some engines take your site off the site list to crawl when you abuse the service.
Link Exchanges
You can often get people to come to your site by emailing a web owner and ask them to put you on their list of links. If you do the same before hand, they may say yes!
Affiliations/Bro Sis Sites
You may have seen this all over the internet. Some people call other people their bro ,sis or affiliate, and basically, this is a prefered link. So if you ask to be an affiliate of a large site and they accept, you get a link on a page and on the link page. You do the same to them. It's a lot like a link exchange, except this link is a lot more better
Join Forums
Forums are a good way to draw people to your site. When you join a message board, you can put a URL in a box so other members can view your site. As well, some boards will allow you to have your URL in your signature, but be sure you read rules of the boards before doing so. Do not spam boards!Or if they have a brawl section in the forums you can fight till your hearts desire That means if you put your URL with each post, u2u-ing or pm-ing people to advertise, or starting a plug for your site in a section meant for chatting! Lots of people do this, and it's a good way to get banned
