Waterlogged Facts



SpongeBob’s character was influenced by Jerry Lewis and Charlie Chaplin.

SpongeBob got his last name from a remark Tom Kenny made, “Boy, look at this sponge in square pants, thinking he can get a job at a fast-food place.” Hillenberg thought it was funny, thus the name SpongeBob Squarepants!

Squidward is in fact not a squid but an octopus.

Squidward’s original voice was done by Hillenberg in an early audi test with Tom Kenny.

The name of the undersea town, Bikini Bottom, was thought up by Hillenberg while taking a drive in his car.

Originally SpongeBob was named Sponge Boy until Hillenberg learned that it was already trademarked.

SpongeBob is very funny.

SpongeBob was first drawn as as real sea sponge but Hillenberg thought it would be even more hilarious for him to resemble a simple kitchen sponge.

Hillenberg’s lips are those seen on Painty in the theme song.

The song played on the 1st episode of SpongeBob, “Living in the Sunlight, Loving in the Moonlight,” was written in 1934.

SpongeBob’s library is 24 shelves high.

Sandy’s voice was modeled after Holl Hunter.

Karen, Plankton’s wife, is played by Tom Kenny’s wife, Jill Talley.

Hillenberg plays ukulele and he surfs.

In the early stages BarnacleBoy was named Barnacle Bill, he had the face of Popeye and an odd log shaped body.

In an early map of Bikini Bottom there was a huge structure called the Flower Arch.

SpongeBob is 4 inches tall.
