CGIProxy 1.4.1

  • how to setup CGIProxy script 1.4.1 on Unix servers.

CGIProxy is a cgi script written in perl. It enables the user to browse the web anonymously and bypass the net-censorship as well. It supports HTTP and FTP. The maker of this script is called James Marshall. For further information, go to www.jmarshall.com.
To use CGIProxy script 1.4.1, you need

  1. WinZip8, Download.

  2. An FTP Client. ( WS_FTP, Cute_FTP )

  3. CGIProxy script 1.4.1, Download.

  4. Webspace account through which you can have full cgi access, Search.

Note
CGIProxy script makes the server overload, therefore, some free webspace account providers may disable the script or delete your account. In this case, create another account or find a pay account with unlimited traffic feature

  • Download WinZip8 , then install it on your computer.

  • Download WS_FTP and install it on your computer.

  • Download the CGIProxy zip file from the link above and save it into My Documents folder. Go to My Documents folder and you will find the zip file there, double click on it. WinZip8 will be launched. Unzip the file and a new folder called unzipped will be created on drive C. CGIProxy 1.4.1 (( CGIProxy 1.4.1 (( C:\CGIProxy 1.4.1 )) folder will be in the folder called unzipped. CGIProxy 1.4.1 folder contains the cgiproxy script 1.4.1 and the readme file.

  • Search for a webspace account with full cgi access from the link above. When you find the suitable one, apply for an account and the provider will send you some information including the web server address (host name), your account user name, and the password.

  • Launch WS_FTP 6.6 Professional program then click on Quick Connect then type the web server address( host name) in the host name field.

  • Type your account user name in the user name field.

  • Type your account password in the password field.

  • Get connected to the server. If you can not connect to the server, check the feature Passive Mode off  and click on Save button. A window will appear, type in the name field cgiproxy then click on the word Sites then OK then reconnect.

  • When you get connected to the server, get to know that files and folders which are on the right side belong to the server and the ones which are on the left side belong to your computer.

  • Now, you will see the following:

    • Two green arrows ( one of them is on the right side and the other is on the left ).

    • Two MkDir buttons ( one of them is on the right side and the other is on the left ).

    • If you do not see a folder called cgi-bin or just bin on the right side, you need to create it. To do this, click on the right MkDir button then type cgi-bin and click on OK.

  • You need to set the permissions to the folder called cgi-bin. To do this, right click on cgi-bin folder then choose chmod(UNIX). A new window will appear. Check all boxes on except the two Write(s) under Group and Other ( The numeric value must be 755 ), then click on OK.

  • On the left side you will see a folder called unzipped, double click on it. Double click on the folder called cgiproxy1.4.1 .You will see the CGIProxy script and the readme files. The CGIProxy script file is called nph-proxy.cgi.

  • Choose ASCII when uploading the CGIProxy script. Always, choose ASCII when uploading ( html, cgi, pl, txt ) files. But when uploading ( jpg, gif, zip, exe ) files, choose Binary.
