Chapter 24

We ran towards the black Expedition when I remembered something. I stopped causing Joey to run into me.

“What are you doing? Lets get away form here.” I ran up the stone steps toward the door to the house. I didn’t answer him.

He yelled after me. “What are you doing?”

I opened the door to the house. “Mom! Dad! We need to leave!” I turned to look at the stairs. “Mom! Dad! Where are you? Mom!”

“What is wrong, sweetie?”

I turned to see my parents in the middle of the ballroom staring at me where they weren’t before. Their smiles calmed me for a second then reality hit me like a blow in the stomach. “We’ve got to get out of this house,” I told them. Joey came through the door running.

Mom looked at me questionably. “Why, sweetie.”

“Its haunted and the ghosts are trying to kill us.”

“What ghosts?” she asked.

I felt something watching me. I looked at the landing. The lady smiled at me from the light that shone through the window behind her.

I pointed. “Those ghosts.”

They looked and had no emotion show in their faces. The ghost smiled and turned her head to look at the chandelier. We followed her gaze and froze in horror of what we saw. The crystal chandelier started to turn. We heard popping.

Suddenly the chandelier broke from its chain and came falling down. I looked at my parents’ horrified faces.

“Mom! Dad! Watch out!” I screamed as I ran towards them.

“Tabitha stop! You’ll never make it!” Joey ran after me. He grabbed my waist and pulled me down on the floor. Joey laid all his weight on me just as I heard crystal breaking on the floor. His hands covered my eyes. I felt little pieces of crystal hit my forehead, cutting me.

I pushed Joey off of me, angerely. Screaming I moved away from where I was standing. What I saw horrified me. Blood dripped from the once clear crystal smearing on the wooden hardwood floor. I could not make out any of my parents. Joey turned away. I collapsed on the blood soaken floor.

My heart hurt so bad I thought I was having a heartattack. I couldn’t breath. I couldn’t blink. I couldn’t cry. Tears stung at my eyes. My parents, the people I first loved, are dead, gone forever.

When I realized we were outside I started screaming. “No! No! They’re not dead! They can’t be! Let me go!” I struggled to break Joey’s and Chris’ hold on my arms. “Let me go! They’re still alive! Perhaps they’re alive! Let me go!”

Joey shook me hard. “Tabitha they’re dead. They’re gone. Let it go. Let it go.”

I shook my head not wanting to believe him. “No, they were supposed to see me get married. They were going to see their grand children, they promised. They promised they would always be there, they promised.” Joey held me close to him. I let him carry me to the Expedition as I cried into his shirt.
