The prologue and epilogue take place outside Moscow in December 1941 and the remainder deals with events in 1926 and 1927, in Leningrad and Moscow.

The play was written in memory of Victor Serge who began his political life as a French anarchist in the first decade of the twentieth century, and ended it a political refugee from Stalinist Russia and fascist Europe.
