Three Words

The air is stale in this room.
Making my lungs work harder.
I'll blame the stuttering and nonsense
Of my words on the air
And my lung's inability to keep up.

But you know the truth.
Im scared.
The abruptness of three words
Falling easily from your mouth
Hit me hard.
Sending my spirit soaring through the stars.
Sending a shock that leaves my entire body numb.
Those three words are the consequences of my actions.

You kiss me and I return to earth.
This room and its air.
This room and your grace.
This room and that wanting look resting on your face.

Can you assure me that its true?
Even though I already know it is.
A patient "yes" in response to my "Really? You do?"
With soft and worried eyes.
I lean in once again to feel your lips
And as we part the words escape me
"I love you too."
