MARLBOROUGH
Rosemary, Marchioness Camden, died in London on 27 February.
[Her late husband, the 5th Marquess, had
been grandson of Lady Clementine Spencer-Churchill, of the Dukes of Marlborough. Michael Rhodes posted this notice on a.t.r.:
"She was the former Rosemary Cecil [Rosie] Pawle, one of the two daughters
of Brigadier-General Hanbury Pawle, CBE, TD, DL [1886-1972], of Ware,
Hertfordshire, by his wife, the former Mary Cecil Hughes-Hallett [d. 1971], and
was a granddaughter of Norton Joseph Hughes-Hallett [1854-1938], head of that
landed family, by his wife Alice Louisa Denton [a descendant of the Barons St
John of Bletso]. Her first marriage was to Group Capt Peter Townsend, CVO, DSO,
DFC. Townsend had been appointed to the staff of King George VI early in 1944,
when a new policy was introduced of honouring officers who had distinguished
themselves during World War II. Prior to this all the sovereign's equerries had
been chosen on a personal basis. The new system catered for temporary
appointments, originally intended to last for three months. "If you don't
find the idea particularly revolting," Air Chief Marshal Sir Charles Portal,
Chief of the Air Staff, told Townsend, "I propose recommending
you..." Waiting outside the Air Ministry building in Whitehall that day as
her husband learned of his royal appointment was Rosemary Townsend, who,
according to Princess Margaret's biographer, when told of Portal's proposal
exclaimed: "We're made." "It was natural... for her to be
glad," Townsend wrote in his autobiography 30 years later, "but how
tragically mistaken she was. For from now on we were destined, as a married couple,
to be "un-made". The "un-making" of the Townsend marriage
effectively began in March, 1944, when her husband arrived at Buckingham Palace
to take up his duties. On 20 December, 1952, a brief notice appeared in some of
the newspapers: "Group Capt Peter Townsend...was granted a decree nisi in
the Divorce Court yesterday on the grounds of misconduct by his wife Cecil
Rosemary. John de Laszlo, an export merchant, and son of the famous portrait
painter, was cited as co-respondent..." Townsends prolonged absences
during the 8 years he had served George VI and Elizabeth II had imposed an
intolerable strain on the marriage. Rosemary Townsend and de Laszlo married but
later divorced [he died in 1990], and in 1978, she married as her third husband
[and his third wife], Henry, 5th Marquess Camden [1899-1983], Gold Staff
Officer at the Coronation of King George VI. Rosemary Camden leaves two sons
from her marriage to Townsend, Giles and Hugo. Giles married a
Craven-Smith-Milnes [of that landed family], and Hugo [who was born in 1945]
married, in 1994, Princess Yolande Marie Gabrielle de Ligne. Rosemary's death
notice also says she is the mother of Charlotte and Piers...children of her
second marriage to Mr de Laszlo ? The funeral service takes place at Chelsea
Old Church, London SW3, on Wednesday 10 March, 2004."
and in a later post: "I've done some
further research. Rosie Pawle married Peter Townsend at Much Hadham, 17 July,
1941. Their first son, Giles, was born in April, 1942. The second son was born,
according to Townsend's biography, six weeks after VE Day [8 May, 1945],
therefore mid-June, 1945. Her age? Well, in his autobiography Townsend says
that _I had stepped out of the cockpit [1941], succumbed at first sight to the
charms of the first pretty girl I met. She was 20 tall and lovely_. So she was
circa 83. She married Mr de Laszlo in 1953, and they divorced in 1977. To de
Laszlo she had a son Piers [aged 19 in January, 1978], and a daughter,
Charlotte Rosemary Cecil, who married Richard Valentine Watkins, son of Mr
Anthony Watkins and Mrs Peter Forbes-Smith. Mrs de Laszlo married the Marquess
Camden in January, 1978, at

SUTHERLAND
The Lady Margaret Colville, CVO, long serving courtier, a great and
lifelong friend of Queen Elizabeth II and an early lady-in-waiting to the then
Princess Elizabeth, and in recent years a Woman of of the Bedchamber to Queen
Elizabeth The Queen Mother, has died in hospital on 3 May at the age of 85.
[She was the former Lady Margaret Egerton, born
20 July, 1918, fifth of the six daughters (with one brother) of the 4th Earl of
Ellesmere (1872-1944), by his wife, Lady Violet Lambton, daughter of the 4th
Earl of Durham. She was brought up at Bridgewater House in London (sold by Lord
Ellesmere circa 1949). This was described as London's largest private
residence. Heavy death duties on his succession to the title forced her brother
to sell the property to the British Oxygen Company. Of her siblings, the
brother, John inherited the Earldom of Ellesmere, and then in 1963 he succeeded
his kinsman as 6th Duke of Sutherland. He died in 2000. Her younger sister,
Lady Alice, was a Woman of the Bedchamber to the Queen, and died in 1977,
unmarried. Lady Margaret was endowed with a beautiful singing voice, and had
been wont to sing a metrical psalm "The Lord is My Shepherd" (Crimond),
in the heather at Balmoral, and taught Princess Elizabeth and Princess
Margaret a little known descant. Lady Margaret -
known as Meg - served in the Second World War in the ATS (Junior Subaltern);
and was appointed Lady-in-Waiting to the young Princess Elizabeth in 1946, and
remained in the post for three years until her husband's appointment in the
Diplomatic Service took her to Lisbon. She was one of the ladies in waiting on
the Princess in Westminster Abbey, 20 Nov 1947, when the Princess married
Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten. Princess Elizabeth remembered Lady Margaret's
"The Lord is My Shepherd" and decided to have this at her wedding,
but nobody could find the score of the descant. Lady Meg, tunefully accompanied
by the two Princesses sang it to the organist and preceptor of Westminster
Abbey who took down notes in musical shorthand and taught it to the Abbey
choir. In 1948 she married at St Margaret's, Westminster, John (Jock) Colville
(later Sir John), who had been appointed Private Secretary to Princess
Elizabeth on her marriage. Colville had been a private secretary to Winston
Churchill during the war. In 1949 she accompanied her husband to Lisbon - where
he served as Counsellor - and when Churchill formed his second administration
in 1951 she and her husband returned to London where John Colville was
appointed Joint Principal Private Secretary to the PM. A memo in the Royal
Archives from Sir Alan Lascelles (GeorgeVI's private secretary) to the King
informing HM of Colville's return to Britain and new appointment has a
postscript in the king's own hand "This is interesting. It will suit Meg
no doubt to get home. G.R." The Colvilles had a daughter (Elizabeth)
Harriet in 1952, followed by a son, Alexander in 1955, and another son Rupert
in 1960. The daughter was christened in February, 1953, with the Queen and
Prime Minister
(Churchill) standing sponsor. (The other
sponsors were Mrs Willie Whitelaw now Viscountess Whitelaw, and the Earl of
Home, later the Prime Minister Alec Douglas-Home). Harriet Colville went on to
marry a cousin of the Queen, David Bowes Lyon, and has been a Lady-in-Waiting
to the Princess Royal since 1990. Lady Margaret's husband (who was knighted in
1974), died in November, 1987, aged 72. In later years, after her widowhood,
Lady Margaret resumed her royal service becoming a Woman of the Bedchamber to
the Queen Mother in 1990 and remaining in the post until Her Majesty's death in
2002. Lady Margaret was invested CVO by the Queen at Buckingham Palace in July,
1994. The funeral takes place at St Mary's, Broughton, Hampshire, near her
home, on Monday 10 May, 2004.] (added 8
