[She was born 6 February 1910, first child of Lord Charles George Francis Mercer-Nairn, formerly Petty-Fitzmaurice (himself the son of Henry, 5th Marquess of Lansdowne, and of his wife, née Lady Maud Evelyn Hamilton [herself the daughter of the 1st Duke of Abercorn]) and his wife, née Lady Violet Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound. In 1931 she married Ririd Myddelton, of Chirk Castle (1902-1988) by whom she had three children.] (added 6 Mar 2003)

Natasha Branston and her husband, Barney Branston, had their second son, Tobias Joseph Slaney, on 19 December.

Mme Rose Escande, née Le Ray d'Abrantès, died on 18 August.
[She was born at Levaré on 14 Oct 1914, the youngest child of Andoche Le Ray, Duc d'Abrantès (1870-1954) and of his wife, née Nicole de Maigret (1878-1957). In 1933 she married François Escande, who was killed in action in 1940. They had three sons and two daughters.] (added 24 Aug 2003)

Arnaud Sarton de Jonchay and his wife, née Laetitia Escande (daughter of Jean Escande [himself the son of François Escande and of his wife, née Rose Le Ray d'Abrantès, for whose death see above] and of his wife, née Arlette de Foucault) had their third child, Cyprien, on 18 December. [She was born at Tendron on 18 Aug 1928, the daughter of Alain Comte de Gourcuff and of his wife, née Odette Le Loup de Sancy de Rolland (herself the daughter of Pierre, Baron Le Loup de Sancy (1877-1919) and of his wife, née Madeleine de Viel de Lunas d'Espeuilles [herself the daughter of the Marquis de Viel de Lunas d'Espeuilles (1831-1913) and of his wife, née Caroline Maret de Bassano (1847-1938), sister of  Napoléon, 3rd and last Duc de Bassano (1844-1906), and daughter of Napoléon, 2nd Duc de Bassano (1803-1898)]). Philip Wyndham Ashley Knatchbull (son of John, 7th Lord Brabourne, and of his wife, Patricia, Countess Mountbatten of Burma [herself the daughter of the late Louis, Earl Mountbatten of Burma, born Prince of Battenberg]) and his wife, née Wendy Leach, had a son, Frederick Michael Hubert, at the Portland Hospital, London, on 6 June. Baron Renaud de Maistre and his wife, née Princess Agnès de Bauffremont-Courtenay (daughter of Prince Charles Emmanuel de Bauffremont-Courtenay [himself the son of Jacques, Prince-Duc de Bauffremont-Courtenay] and of his wife, née Blanche de Chabannes) had their first child, Hugues, at Paris on 2 June. Prince Hugues de Bauffremont-Courtenay (son of Prince Charles-Emmanuel de Bauffremont-Courtenay [himself the son of Jacques, Prince-Duc de Bauffremont-Courtenay] and of his wife, née Blanche de Chabannes) and his wife, née Solenne de Breil de Pontbriand, had their first child, Blandine, on 22 September. Elizabeth, Countess Russell, née Sanders, died at Marie Curie Centre, Edenhall, 11 Lyndhurst Gardens, London, on 30 January.
[She was born the daughter of Horace and Julie Sanders. She married in 1962 Hon. Conrad Russell [of the Dukes of Bedford], who succeeded as 5th Earl Russell in 1987. She is survived by him and by their two children: Nicholas, Viscount Amberley, and Hon. John Russell.] (added 4 Feb 2003)

Henry Robin Ian Russell, 14th Duke of Bedford, died in London on 13 June.
[He was born 21 Jan 1940, the son of John Russell, then Lord Howland and later 13th Duke of Bedford (1917-2002), and of his first wife, née Claire Gwendolen Bridgeman. He married Henrietta Joan Tiarks in 1961. They had three sons, the eldest of whom, Andrew Ian Henry, succeeds as 15th Duke of Bedford.] (added 14 Jun 2003)

Euan Rellie and his wife, née Lucy Sykes (daughter of Mark Richard Sykes [himself the son of Christopher Hugh Sykes and of his wife, née Camilla Georgiana Russell (herself the daughter of Sir Thomas Wentworth Russell, of the Dukes of Bedford)] and of his second wife, née Valerie Goad) had their first child, Heathcliff Felix Alastair Euan, on 31 July. Agnes Mary Russell, née Parsons, died on 27 September.
[She was born 25 November 1918, daughter of Rev. Richard Edward Parsons (of the Earls of Rosse) and of his wife, née Hester Katherine Drummond (of the Earls of Perth). In 1941 she married Cosmo Rex Ivor Russell (son of Sir Odo Russell, of the Barons Ampthill and the Dukes of Bedford, and of Marie Luise Gräfin von Rex [whose mother was Marie-Anna Gräfin zu Pappenheim]). [Javier's grandfather, the Duke of Berwick, is the senior male-line descendant of James Fitzjames, Duke of Berwick (natural son of King James II of England and Scotland by Arabella Churchill). He was attainted in 1695 and the title was declared forfeited.] (added 24 Oct 2003)

Don Fabio Perrelli Tomacelli Filomarino, Principe di Boiano, Duca d'Atri, Duca di Monasterace e di Cutrofiano, Duca di Nardò, Duca di Noci, Duca di Casalaspro e di Pietragalla, etc (son of the late Don Giustiniano, Principe di Boiano, etc (1869-1932), and of his wife, the late Duchessa Donna Giulia Acquaviva d'Aragona (1907-1967)) died, unmarried, in Metaponto, Calabria, on 1 March, at the age of 82.
[He succeeded his mother, last of her family, in the Ducal titles of Atri, Nardò, Noci, Casalaspro and Pietragalla, in 1935 by Royal Decree of the King of Italy. Probably the Heir of the titles of House Perrelli Tomacelli Filomarino (with the exception of House Acquaviva d'Aragona's titles, that are definitively extinct) will be Don Fabio's cousin, Don Riccardo (b.1931), son of the late Don Eduardo Perrelli Tomacelli Filomarino dei principi di Boiano, Duca della Torre di Teverolaccio and of the late Donna Maria Antonia Del Balzo dei duchi di Caprigliano. Donna Violante Visconti di Modrone, née Caracciolo (b.Rome 19 March 1943, daughter of Don Adolfo Caracciolo dei Duchi de Melito (1905-1968) and of his wife, née Donna Anna Visconti di Modrone (1903-1977)) died on 24 January.
[She married in 1962 Don Gianmaria Visconti di Modrone (son of Don Luigi, Duca di Grazzano Visconti (1905-1967) and of his first wife, née Maddalena Arrivabene Valenti Gonzaga (1909-1996).]

They divorced, and she married, secondly, Jean, marquis de Mailly-Nesle et prince d'Orange (1915-2001), son of Augustin, marquis de Mailly-Nesle (d.1955) and of his wife, née Léonie de Rohan Chabot (1894-1918). Alberto Nuno Carlos Rita Feyo Folque de Mendoca Rolim de Mourra Barreto, 4th Duque de Loulé, 4th Marques de Loulé, 12th Conde de Vale de Reis, died on 24 September.
[He was born at Lisbon on 10 July 1923, son of José Pedro de Bastos Feio Folque (1888-1969) and of his wife, Costança Berquo de Mendoça, Duquesa de Loulé (1889-1965), herself descended from the marriage of Nuno de Mendoça, Duque de Loulé (1804-1875) with the Infanta Anna de Jesus Maria of Portugal (1806-1857). In 1953 he married Maria Augusta de Morais Cardoso de Menezes (herself descended from King Louis XV of France). They had eight children. Princess Dorothy Troubetzkoy died on 8 December.
[She was born at Hartford Connecticut in 1914, daughter of George Ulrich and Alice Smith. In 1941 she married Prince Serge Sergeievich Troubetzkoy (1914-2001). She was an award-winning writer under the name Ulrich Troubetzkoy.

Toby Edmond Luard Morton Mansel-Pleydell (son of David Gabriel Morton Mansel-Pleydell [himself the son of Ralph Morton Mansel-Pleydell and of his wife, Countess Marguerite d'Ursel] and of his wife, née Elizabeth Luard) and his wife, Anna, had twin sons, John and Theodore, at Budapest on 3 January.

Baroness Albert Kervyn de Lettenhove, née Countess Bénédicte d'Ursel, died at Hodoumont on 29 January.
[She was born on 8 February 1921 and was the daughter of Count Georges d'Ursel and of his second wife, née Countess Elisabeth de Bousies. She married Baron Albert Kervyn de Lettenhove (1917-1998) in 1942. She is survived by her eight children and at least 15 grandchildren.] (Added 1-31-03)
