The daughters of the Earls of Wemyss and March bear the title Lady before their Christian names; the sons bear the prefix "Honourable" before theirs.

Sir John Wemyss [Weems], of That Ilk, cr Baronet [S] 1625 [with remainder to heirs male whatsoever], cr 1628 Lord Wemyss of Elcho [S], with remainder to heirs male bearing name and arms of Wemyss, cr 1633 Earl of Wemyss, Lord Elcho and Methil [S], with the same remainder; he was born 1586, and d.22 Nov 1649; he m.1609 Hon. Jean Gray (d.17 Aug 1640); they had eight sons and eight daus, of whom all d. young except:

Anna Balfour (d.Wemyss 10 Nov 1649); m.2^nd Cumbernauld 1650 Lady Helenor Fleming (dsp Wemyss 20 Apr 1652); m.3^rd Sheriffhall 13 Jan 1653 Lady Margaret Leslie, Dowager Css of Buccleuch (d.Feb 1688); in 1651 he obtained new patent with remainder to heirs male of his body, then to his nominees, and then to heirs male whatsoever; in 1672 he received a newer patent with remainder to his younger daughter, Margaret, and then to other heirs of entail; these new patents apparently affected the peerages but not the 1625 Baronetcy, which became dormant on his death
