C. Hay of Yester; Tweeddale
This line probably descended in the male line from Sir
William de Haya, ancestor also of the Earls of
Erroll, and was probably one generation more removed from the Earls of Erroll
than were the Earls of Kinnoull. However, the sources are not in agreement
about the exact descent. A more junior branch of this line became the Hay of
Alderston Baronets.
Part C-1
John Hay, of Yester, cr 1488 Lord Hay of Yester, d.[probably in Sep but certainly before 23 Oct] 1508; m.1st

Cunningham (d.1528/9); his maternal grandmother was a dau of King Robert III
1a) [ex 1] Thomas, d.1502/4; said to have m.Elizabeth,
dau of 2nd Lord Home; Scots Peerage notes that if this is true it
must have happened before 1490, when she was quite young, and it may have been
a child marriage and never legally valid; she m.2nd James, Lord
Hamilton, Earl of Arran, who divorced her in 1504 on the grounds that Hay had
been still living when she married Hamilton; Thomas apparently m.2nd
Elizabeth Borthwick, with whom he had a son;
1b) Sir Thomas (ca 1483-d.before
23 Oct 1508); according to The Complete Peerage, it is possible that he
survived his grandfather by some days or weeks; if so, he should be known as 2nd
Lord Hay

document showing that Lord Borthwick had married her by 1583, though he was but
“14” years old; she must have been a few years even younger
