Erskine
Earls of Mar, Mar & Kellie, Buchan, and Rosslyn,
etc.
Part 1
Sir Robert Erskine, of that Ilk, cr ca 1438 Lord Erskine,
d.1451/2; m.Elizabeth, dau of David Lindsay, Earl of Crawford; on the death in
1435 of Alexander Stewart, 13th Earl of Mar, he claimed the title of
Earl of Mar, as being heir of earlier holders of the title; his son Thomas also
claimed the title until Parliament confirmed in 1458 that said earldom had
reverted to the Crown; the earldom was restored to the Erskines
1565; note that the sources do not agree in the numbering of the older earls;
Cokayne calls Robert Erskine the 12th Earl of Mar, and this page
will follow that numbering

13th Earl of Mar, and actually used the title until 1458, d.ca 1493;

Erskine, restored 1565 as Earl of Mar, d.Stirling 28
Oct 1572; m.by 29 Jan 1557 Anabel Murray (d.Feb 1603); he was 17th
Earl of Mar of the original earldom claimed by the previous Erskines;
however, the House of Lords determined in 1875 that this restoration also
created a separate earldom, of which he was the first holder; as will be seen,
the older earldom eventually descended to female heirs, and the newer one
eventually diverged from it, as it was limited to heirs male
