the rivalry between the families. A huge dowry was agreed on; in lieu of cash
the Frangepans put up some of their best properties. Then, in about 1414
Friedrich met and eloped with Veronika von Desnic (one historian calls her
"the luscious Veronika"); Friedrich left Elisabeth and set up house
with Veronika. Both families were furious. Finally, under much pressure,
Friedrich returned to Elisabeth in 1422. The morning after Friedrich's first
night back, Elisabeth was found murdered in her bed. The
Frangepans, furious, attacked Friedrich's lands. Friedrich fled to
