4. SAVANNA
I remembered the look on Jesse’s face the next night when we were in the middle of dinner. Knowing what I was thinking about, Jesse glared at me.
“Shaddup”
“Hey, you don’t know what I was thinking” Her glare silenced me and I resorted to snorting into my cream of pumpkin soup. It was a shitty orange colour and for the price, it wasn’t that fantastic. But it was better than mum’s so…
Omigod it was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. Jess just kinda laughed until she passed out and I was standing there thinking “What the..?” It was great. And the guys from Hanson, they were looking at her like she was a total nuff. Then she sobered up, excused herself and hurried from the lobby. When I found her she was lying face down on her bed, wishing that she were dead. I told her that it was all right, that girls probably pass out at their feet every day. She told me I didn’t understand, so I gave up trying.
The next morning, bailey invited us to go and watch the first day of filming for the three-week long clip. I was ready but Jess hung back.
“I don’t want to” Bailey stared at her.
“Come on Jess…all you ever wanted to do a couple of weeks ago was meet Hanson”
“Yeah and I did so been there done that”
“You don’t mean that…if you’re just embarrassed, don’t be…they’re okay about…it…really” But Jesse would not be persuaded. So we left her at the motel. I felt kind of guilty, leaving her alone. But to tell you the truth, she was getting on my nerves.
The filming was happening in the streets of the city mainly. A section had been roped off especially and when we arrived there were already a couple of hundred teenage girls. That number multiplied as a blue van pulled up and the Hanson guys piled out. They were ushered straight into a marquee that had been erected and we were told to follow them. Bailey was taken off with the three guys to get her face all done up…like she needed it!
It was so boring just sitting there like an idiot, waiting for someone to talk to. But then, finally, Taylor was finished with the hairdresser. He made his way over to where I was sitting.
“Hi”
“Hey” I replied, glad for somebody, anybody to talk to, particularly if it was Taylor Hanson
“Jesse right?”
“No…Sav…Jesse was the one who kinda fainted yesterday” Taylor’s eyes crinkled at the corners in a smile.
“Oh…sorry. Hey, Jesse isn’t here”
“No…she uh…was detained”
“Embarrassed to hell?”
“Pretty much” I laughed and he joined in as Bailey flopped down next to me.
“Alright people, let’s get this show on the road! I need Katie, Jacob, Bailey, Zachary, Taylor and Isaac pronto!” The producer cried. I watched as everybody scattered to begin filming.
I never knew that making a film clip would be so boring. All it consisted of was Bailey walking around the city and a camera following her. I got bored to holy hell about fifteen minutes into the first hour. When Bailey came in for her make-up to be fixed up, I told her that I was going back to get Jess and to the shops. She nodded hurriedly, thanked me for coming and succumbed to the beauticians brush.
There were still crowds outside the marquee and as I opened the flap all these girls began snapping photos, I nearly shit myself.
“Omigod! Did you meet Hanson?” One girl screamed excitedly. I wanted to tell her to get a life, but then I realised that if I had been in her position I would probably have done the same thing.
“Yeah” I replied.
“Omigod!” her and her friends began shrieking and I rolled my eyes before finding a taxi and going in search of Jesse.
I love cappuccinos! There’s this little café called TRIOS that make the best cappuccinos in the city! The only problem was that we had to catch a tram home. Now keep in mind that neither Jesse nor I had ever lived in the city and had only ever been to Melbourne a couple of times. So catching a tram unaccompanied was quite an adventure for us.
“Zone 5 you piece of shit!” I screamed at the ticket machine as it ate my third five-dollar note.
“Give her her freakin’ ticket!” Jesse had a go at the machine. In desperation I kicked it in the guts.
“You know that won’t work,” Said a voice behind us. Some girl was standing there.
“Oh yeah? I asked sardonically. She stared at me blankly.
“Yeah…but pressing ‘RETRIEVE TICKET’ might help” I blushed and Jesse laughed.
“Shut up fainty”
We got back to the marquee in time to watch Bailey’s final take for the day. She grinned and hurried over to us.
“Omigod! It was great!” She cried, hugging us in turn. I noticed Zac behind her, glaring at her back. What the hell was his problem? I caught his eyes and made a face at him. His own face cracked into an infectious smile.
Bailey decided that we should spend some Q time together that night. So we hired some chick power movies like DOUBLE JEOPARDY, TERMINATOR 2 and BUFFY: THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. We sat up into the night taking advantage of the all night room service.
Two days later, Bailey had her second day of filming. Jesse had finally come down from her embarrassment enough to come with us. At least this time I would have somebody to talk to. There was the usual crowd outside the marquee and the Hanson’s were inside. We said hi and Jesse stood in the background. Taylor smiled at her.
“Hey Jesse” Jess grinned like a doofus and mumbled.
“Hi” before we sat down to wait for the filming to begin.
Bailey flounced over to us about three hours later and flopped before us.
“I HATE Zachary Hanson!” She grumbled under her breath.
"Why?” Jesse asked.
“He’s an asshole! He’s been nothing but horrible to me since we began filming”
“Maybe he lurves you” Jess commented. Bailey glared at her.
“Don’t be a dick-head…it’s not that, it’s just mutual hate!”
Through this exchange I happened to look up and see Taylor Hanson standing not far from us, his eyes riveted to Bailey. My own eyes widened. Surely the Taylor Hanson wasn’t interested in our Bailey?
