PROLOGUE
Tendrils of steam rose from the still damp roads. From well around the corner, she could feel the thumping of the bass. Beside her, walking on the road, Lee hitched his satchel onto his shoulder.
“Listen, I’ll vouch for you kid, but no stuffing around ok? If you screw up at all, it’ll be the last time” She rolled her eyes but nodded her head gently as they rounded the last corner. Her new high heels clacking loudly on the pavement. The noise seemed to be irritating an already touchy Lee, so she tried to walk more quietly.
Two burly bouncers menaced the crowd of at least seventy people, waiting to get into the B52, but the smaller one’s face broke into a broad grin as he saw Lee and clapped him on the shoulder.
“Lee…how are you? Got the graveyard shift huh?”
“Yeah Jack, look, this is my kid sister, she’s alright, she’s just gonna sit there, can I bring her in?” Jack seemed to think about this for only a matter of seconds before nodding his dark head. She watched, silently for a change, fascinated by the nightlife on display as Lee lead her into the club.
Up the front stair and left into the blue bar bar, Straight ahead until you hit the employee’s lounge where Lee dumped his bag and changed into his shirt.
“You can go out there kid” He told her. The way he called her kid was beginning to annoy her. She pushed through the swinging doors and was immediately swamped by the bass, the floor beneath her vibrated uncontrollably and she gripped the nearby railing, glancing over the edge to the dance floor below.
He was leaning against the bar on the ground floor of B52 when she saw him. Her blue eyes locked with his. A tremor of static ripped through her body as she stood, captivated by his hazel-green eyes. He stared back at her, unable to look away. The spell was broken only, when a group of kids she knew were seniors at her school, brushed past her.
But she would remember those eyes for the rest of her life, in her darkest moments, they would lift her up and send her soaring on wings of pure gold. They would hold her prisoner for the rest of her life, but she could not know that after only her first meeting with Gray Fontaine.
