Argumentation for the Existence of Dragons - written by Ilith
Webster's dictionary defines a dragon as “archaic: a huge serpent…a fabulous animal usually represented as a monstrous winged and scaly serpent or saurian with a crested head and enormous claws.” Even though this is a definition of a dragon, what are they? Could they have ever existed or do they exist right now? This may be a rather difficult point to prove their existence, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion… here is my proof that dragons have, and may in fact, exist. After searching through the Internet, I have found many sources to try and support my belief that dragons at once existed or do exist. In an FAQ (frequently asked questions) document written by a dragon, named Baxil may help shed some light on this topic. Dragons are mythic creatures… found in legends and stories of almost every civilization. There are two major types: Western dragons, which are associated with reptiles, and are often seen as guards of great treasure or tests of a hero's strength in their culture's legends; and Eastern dragons, which are characterized with the powers of nature (Ramspott 2). As stated before, “dragons are mythic creatures…” placed in history to be feared and killed, if possible, but what exactly is a myth? Every culture has its own form of a
dragon, from the Greeks and the myth of Hercules and the Hydra to the belief of Christians and Catholics of the disciple John foreseeing the Devil in the form of a red dragon (Revelations 12: 1-9). However, a myth is a story that is profoundly true, and has a deep impact on believers' lives. This means that the belief may be true to the believer, no matter if they can be proven to be scientifically true or not. One cannot touch on this subject and disregard the people who believe they are dragons, whether spiritually or otherwise. Some people consider them to be “crazy” or trying to find a way to escape reality, but in truth to face this fact is very difficult. The very act of accepting one's draconity involves mental struggle; proclaiming one's draconity to friends and relatives often results in estrangement; and there is no “fantasy world” that a dragon can hide in – on the contrary, dragons have the added difficulty of trying to fit into human society as a spiritual outsider (Ramspott 3). This again, fits into the category of this belief being true to the believer and no way to change his/her mind about it by trying to prove it wrong. But there still is the question at hand: do dragons really exist? The answer is yes, they do. Several lizards bare the name of “dragon,” the most common one known being the Komodo dragon, and others that fall into this category would be the Pterosaurs or the Archaeopteryx; two types of flying dinosaurs (Walker 10). There is also the idea of dragonflies having been thought of as dragons, yet their size in the time of the dinosaurs was much larger, also. There is no telling of definite, hard-core, evidence whether dragons ever existed on Earth, but there is one of the largest free roaming habitat of all that may contain
dragons; the imagination (Katen and others 20). One can only have that frame of mind and be able to have faith in such a controversial idea, the existence of dragons or the belief that others are dragons may be strange, but how else can one prove dragons ever existed?
