So lately I've had this obsession with Japan.
I guess it all started with Ranma 1/2 my senior year. Jen bought the first season and I quickly became addicted to this new form of cartoon
called "anime". Not knowing at the time of course that Digimon was anime also, so I suppose you could say it started earlier than that.
Skip ahead to a week after I start college when I find out, low and behold, they have an anime club! So I join, and thus starts my real education.
After watching many new and interesting anime series, being fed pocky, and having some people with more knowledge of Japanese culture than I
regale me with tales of finding just about everything you'd ever want in vending machines, I decided Japan is the best country ev-ar!
A big statement, I know, since Australia is pretty cool too, ditto with Canada, but I now have a new obsession. Let me share it with you.
News: I grudgingly accept the fact that Japan is probably not in dire need of Irish stunt doubles and I should wait to move there till after I get my own jet. |
Anime Club pictures Here at KSU we have a nifty little thing called the Anime and Manga Society. And what we do is get together every week in the Union and watch several episodes of a few unlicensed anime series. Currently it's Gankutsuoh, Yakitate, Bleach, Dogtato and Beck. Past series have included Kiddy Grade, Naruto, and Gundam Seed. This is also the place where the core group of us exchange dvd's and manga. There's always a chance someone will bring Japanese snacks (or any snacks) and of course we have random conversations. There's usually some hanging out afterwards as well. And we now have spiffy membership cards! They have a cute little anime version of the powercat on them and we can use them in various stores around town to get discounts on Japanese shtuff (mostly anime and manga)! This card gets top spot in my wallet, for it is more valuable than my student id or drivers license. |
A-kon pictures A-kon is this nifty little convention in Dallas, Texas held every year for 3 days at the beginning of June. Starting last year, the KSU Anime and Manga Society has decided to make this our yearly field trip until we can afford a bigger one that doesn't interfere with school. Last year about 11,000 people attended, most of whom were dressed up in either simple or elaborate cosplay costumes. A-kon has taught me many things about life, love, and the pursuit of pocky, most of which are things my future wife will be really pissed at me for passing on to our children. And one of these days I'm actually going to have enough money to buy at least a good chunk of things I want. And enough shrip crackers to last me the rest of the year. |
