Stargate SG-1
Three years after a movie called Stargate made a splash at the cinema, a spin-off series, Stargate SG-1, finally reached our TV screens. As something completely different to the other shows on air at the time, Stargate SG-1 quickly found a place for itself in the genre TV market. Of course, the series had the advantage of an already well-known title and premise, and the producers were safe in the knowledge that fans of the original movie were almost certain to tune in to this new spin-off, and to tell their friends to do likewise. The only problem was how to ensure fans of the Stargate movie would be pleased with this new adaptation, and continue tuning in accordingly.
This problem was successfully solved by a feature-length pilot episode which intricately wove the beginning of the spin-off series to the end of the original movie, and served to reassure viewers that the series would build on the strong points of the movie, rather than casting aside what had already been achieved and starting from scratch. A big part of this was the re-introduction of two characters already familiar to fans of the movie - Colonel Jack O'Neill and Dr Daniel Jackson. However, these characters did look rather different, with ex-MacGyver star Richard Dean Anderson taking over Kurt Russell's role of the Colonel, and Michael Shanks replacing James Spader as Dr Jackson. Both immediately made the roles their own though and, with the addition of new characters Samantha Carter, General Hammond, and Teal'c, a winning team was formed.
Although originally focusing on the planet Abydos, as featured in the Stargate movie, Stargate SG-1 quickly branched out, allowing the characters to explore some of the many worlds reached by the stargate, and setting up an almost infinite number of possibilities for the show to follow - keeping it in storylines for a long time to come. Since then, the show has gained in confidence, firmly establishing all of its characters and their relationships to one another, as well as setting up various story arcs. Add to that the inclusion of the different alien races encountered by SG-1, and a number of strong recurring characters, both good and bad, and it's easy to see how this series has won over so many people, whether fans of the original movie or not, and just why it continues to entertain.
