Despite an attempt to play down comparisons between Mutant X and Bryan Singer's strikingly similar X-Men movies (not to mention the comic book franchise), there's no doubt this show is aimed at the same audience, and should be of great interest to fans of the X-Men universe. However, this also means that the show's longevity could well depend on how these fans relate to the premise and characters of Mutant X.
A promising sign early on was the casting of an established genre star, Lois & Clark's John Shea, as the series’ most pivotal character and moral centre of the show, Adam. And an appealing ensemble cast soon built up around this character, with a perfect mix of experience and fresh faces being brought in to portray the Mutant X team. Throughout the show's first two seasons, an interesting balance developed as these characters interacted within their team, as well as with outsiders - setting up the relationships nicely for stories still to come. Especially impressive has been Victor Webster, playing Brennan Mulwray - a street-smart mutant with the capacity to generate extraordinary amounts of electricity within his own being - who quickly became a firm fan-favourite.
Now moving into its third season, Mutant X has built up an impressive fanbase - a fanbase that may still grow with the series' upcoming step in a new direction. With Lauren Lee Smith's character, Emma, departing at the end of season two, a new mutant, Lexa Pierce, joins the Mutant X team in year three, while Adam makes the transition to supporting character, opening the show up to become a younger, more action-orientated hour of television. One that, providing viewing figures remain positive, should present fans with their weekly fix of mutant action for a long time to come....
