Based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, The Dead Zone (previously brought to life on screen by David Cronenberg’s movie, with Christopher Walken in the lead role) has now found its way into a regular prime-time slot on television, and has been welcomed with open arms by both critics and audiences alike.
In this series, the role of psychic Johnny Smith has been picked up by Anthony Michael Hall, while former Star Trek: Deep Space Nine actress Nicole De Boer appears as Johnny’s ex-fiancee, Sarah. Once close, Johnny finds himself separated from the love of his life when, after waking up from a six-year coma, he discovers Sarah has married local sheriff, Walt Bannerman. Meanwhile, Johnny’s son is being brought up as if he were Walt’s own child, and Johnny’s mother has passed away, leaving Johnny to be cared for by the Reverend Purdy.
But Johnny has other things to cope with as well - namely that his accident has caused his brain to access its ‘dead zone.’ Through the dead zone, Johnny starts to experience frighteningly real visions, which at first scare him. However, the visions do prove to have their uses, as they enable Johnny to save lives. The question Johnny must ask himself is: are the visions a gift or a curse?
