Summary- In THE KEYS OF MARINUS, Barbara makes the only deal she can with Vasor to save her life and those of her friends.

They were all going to die, Barbara thought frantically. She stared at Vasor, a powerful figure in his furs, and knew she could not defeat him by hand. Yet Ian was out there somewhere, wandering in danger, likely to die if she couldn't somehow help him!

And Vasor had their travel dials and the Keys.

"Please," Barbara begged, "please, we'll give you anything we can. We'll come back with whatever you want, if you just let us leave now, with what belongs to us."

Vasor rumbled a laugh from deep in his chest. "I cannot trust you. And you have just confirmed that what I have now is indeed valuable. I think I'll take my chances and keep it."

"You will have Ian's death on your conscience. And Susan's, and Sabetha's," Barbara warned. "Besides whatever you plan to do with ME."

Vasor shrugged carelessly. "I care nothing about them. They will meet their own fates. If they die, I didn't kill them. As for you.... You are a beautiful woman, Barbara, and I often get lonely up here, all by myself."

His lustful gaze raked over her. Barbara's first impulse was to seize a weapon, any item within reach. Her next impulse was to think about how she could use Vasor's words to help herself. To save Ian, and Susan, and Sabetha. It might be possible.

She took a deep breath and forced herself to smile at Vasor. "I'm sure you do get very lonely. Maybe I could help you with that. For a price. After all, nothing in this world is free."

Vasor reared back in astonishment, then roared with laughter. "Well said, Barbara, well said. And I would much prefer you willing. I suppose I know what your price might be?"

"I suppose you do," Barbara said tightly. "Let's talk terms first."

When Vasor made his offer, Barbara supposed she should feel complimented by the value he had placed upon her. She made one additional condition in return: that Ian and the others never know about their deal.

Vasor kept his word.
