Kwanzaa is an African-American cultural celebration that introduces and establishes principles and practices designed to recapture the essence of the African American selves and give the children and their descendants a positive Afro-centric value system for the future. It was first created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, founder and chairman of the Black Nationalist Organization, "US". It is celebrated from December 26 to January 1st.

Kwanzaa is from a Swahili word, "Kwanza", which means first which comes from the phrase "Matunda Ya Kwanza" which translates as "First Fruits"
