COMMENTARY:

This concert is the last of fourteen straight concerts at the Fox Warfield Theater and Dylan seems to savor the moment. Dylan speaks to the crowd a number of times, commenting on his affection for San Francisco and specifically responding to comments yelled from the audience. He also introduces a new song, "Ain't No Man Righteous" for the first time. While the individual performances are not uniformly exceptional, a number stand out, including "Slow Train," "Ain't No Man Righteous" and "What Can I Do For You," among others.

There are a number of minor miscues, notable primarily for the light they shed upon Dylan's performance style and the complexity of some of the new songs: Dylan begins "Man Gave Names" in a different key and both bass and keyboards quickly alter to accommodate this new approach. Dylan continues to alter the interludes between verses of "Solid Rock" and tries a new cadence and beginning point for "What Can I Do For You" but this time the band doesn't even flinch. Dylan extends the repetition of the chorus in "Pressing On" beyond where the band generally enters, stealing the thunder of the verse "shake the dust right off your feet," but appears to do so intentionally, continuing to draw out a captivated audience with the mantra-like chorus.

Overall, this concert serves as a typically Dylanesque capstone to an exceptional sojourn in his career as a touring musician. The nerves and most of the kinks which were so apparent on the first few nights have been worked out. The backlash by the popular local and national press have been weathered, in part, by the rapturous response of the audience members there to hear what Dylan had to offer. As is so often the case, Dylan has disappointed those expecting to hear and see an icon of popular culture. Yet, for those with eyes to see and ears to hear -- by no means solely Christian eyes and ears -- Dylan has delivered an extraordinary body of work.

He has subsumed his own wandering genius within the strict and carefully choreographed structure of a small, tight band and an unwavering setlist which carefully balances the rapture and prayers of his faith within the vocabulary of stripped-down gospel music. Underpinning the Christian message of his new songs, there is a revivalist fervor to the music itself as Dylan seeks to reappropriate a vital source of what has become rock-and-roll. For those willing to listen, for those who arrived at the Fox Warfield Theater ready to hear what Dylan wanted to play, the result was nothing short of a musical and artistic revelation.

ANNOTATIONS:

SERVE SOMEBODY

I BELIEVE IN YOU

WHEN YOU GONNA WAKE UP?

WHEN HE RETURNS

MAN GAVE NAMES TO ALL THE ANIMALS

PRECIOUS ANGEL

Dylan: "Thank you. You know we read in the newspaper every day, what a horrible situation this world is in. Now God chooses to do these things in this world to confound the wise. Anyway, we know this world is going to be destroyed. We know that. Christ will set up his kingdom in Jerusalem for a thousand years where the lion will lie down with the lamb. Have you heard that before? (Applause) Have you heard that before? (Applause) I'm just curious to know, how many believe that? (More Applause) Alright. This is called "Slow Train Coming". It's been coming a long time and it's picking up speed."

SLOW TRAIN COMING

CROWD: "Oh Yeah!" "Bob Dylan!" (various song titles) "You're the greatest!"

Woman's voice:"Play what you want, Bob!"

Man: "He will."

Dylan: "You're right."

COVENANT WOMAN

Dylan: "We're gonna do something right here that we haven't done before. This is a song that nobody knows. Nobody in this band even knows it -- that's how I can tell who really wants to stick with me and who doesn't. Well, Regina knows it and I'm gonna call her up and have her sing it for you. If I forget the lyrics, I know she won't. This is called "No Man Righteous, No, Not One"."

AIN'T NO MAN RIGHTEOUS

Dylan: "Alright. Yes, I, I'm sure that's going to be on the next album. Regina, I want you to hear her sing another song. Uh, wait. Mona, Mona Lisa's gonna come and sing a song for you, I know you'll wanna hear. Yeah, I know you'll wana hear it and it's good for you to hear it. It's called, "God Uses Ordinary People."

GOD USES ORDINARY PEOPLE (Mona Lisa Young, vocals)

GONNA CHANGE MY WAY OF THINKING

CROWD: "Like a Rolling Stone!"

DO RIGHT TO ME BABY

Dylan: "Thank you. You know, I really want to thank all you people for all the letters and all the cards and all the encouragement. It's so kind. Alright"

CROWD: "God loves you Bobby!"

Dylan: "He loves you too, don't you forget it. Alright, this is called, well this is a song we been working in on. And we hope to record sometime. Maybe it'll be out uh-- they hold my records so long you know . . . You might hear it, in a month from now, maybe a year from now, but remember whenever you do remember you heard it first right here. I tell you San Francisco is a great town. We know that there're a lot of things wrong with it, but we, there are a lot of people here that we love. And we're gonna miss it too. Anyway, this is called "Hanging On To A Solid Rock, Made Before The Foundation Of The World"."

SOLID ROCK

SAVING GRACE

Dylan: "That's right. You know, Satan's called the god of this world -- that's true -- and it's such a wonderful feeling when you've been delivered from that."

SAVED

CROWD: "I believe in Highway 61!"

WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU

IN THE GARDEN

#EDIT - clips last few notes - on final "yeah!" by backing singers

Dylan: "On the keyboards tonight, give him a warm hand, Spooner Oldham. On the other set of keyboards, Terry Young. On lead guitar, Fred Tackett. On, playing the drums tonight, Jim Keltner. And on bass guitar, Tim Drummond. Singing on the bottom tonight is Helena Springs. Singing in the middle is Regina McCreary. Singing on top is Mona Lisa Young.

I'll say it again, it's just like, we've been here a while now, it does feel just like the first night however. I wish we could stay longer, but we can't -- we got to go. So we want to give all praise and glory to God tonight. Ain't nobody down here deserve any. Alright."

BLESSED IS THE NAME

#EDIT -

PRESSING ON

- Dylan begins first stanza over the backing singers repeating the chorus.

 SOURCES:

Three known reference tapes circulating:

The first (161179CWLD) is a mono audience recording which lacks the seven opening songs by the band but includes the eighth song, "God Uses Ordinary People" by the band and sung by Mona Lisa Young. This recording circulates widely as a commercial bootleg entitled "Contract With The Lord."

This recording is simply superb, but for tape speed problems during "Precious Angel and a destructive edit clipping the last few notes of "In The Garden".

The second (161179JSMD) is a mono audience recording which lacks all eight songs performed by the band and the band introductions before "Blessed Is The Name".

This recording is also superb, recorded at a slightly faster speed than 161179CWL. This recording has a clean "Precious Angel" but also has a destructive edit clipping the last few notes of "In The Garden".

The third (161179PBMD) is a mono audience recording and appears to be simply another incarnation of the 161179JSMD master. It lacks all eight songs performed by the band, but includes the band introductions preceding "Blessed Is The Name."

This recording is also superb, has a number of very minor edits between songs (suggesting digital remastering?) and has a destructive edit clipping the last few notes of "In The Garden."

These recordings will be combined to provide a single clean (stereo?) copy of this concert, entitled "Picking Up Speed" -- a fan-based project which should begin circulating in early 2002.
