The Little Girl

by Aimee

from FrightScape

Desiree' breathed in a lungful of fresh air as she stepped out of the girls' dormitory and headed to the cafeteria. Ah, the wonderful feeling of freshness, newness. This was her freshmen year of college, and she wanted to make it her best.

As she picked up a tray, something caught her eye. Desiree' looked over and smiled. It was Jarris, the guy in her Chemistry Class. He was her lab partner, and secretly, she thought he looked just adorable in a lab coat and goggles.

He caught her eye and smiled. Then, with one finger, beckoned her to come over. She then smiled again, picked up her tray, and carefully walked to the other side of the cafeteria, careful not to spill her soda and bowl of soup.

As she sat down, he thought to ask her how her day was, where she was from, her interests, ect, since Jarris had never seen her before today. He'd be careful not to tell her everything there was to know about him.

Back at the dorm, at the end of a busy, first day, Desiree' sat at her desk with her Chem notes, History books, and English book and notes. She tried to concentrate, but a pair of bluish-green eyes kept popping into her head. "I got to admit," she said to herself "we have a lot in common." Thinking to herself, she couldn't stop thinking HOW CUTE he was! And he was so sweet! Jarris had even carried her to the front of the dorm after History class.

Desiree' was so wrapped up with her thoughts, that she barely noticed the movement coming from the door. But she noticed it enough to swish her head over in time to see the outline of a little girl going out of her room into her bathroom.

She shook her head in annoyance. Someone's little sister was obviously left behind after the parents had left. Desiree' got up slowly and walked carefully over to the bathroom, so not to scare the little girl obviously hiding from somebody.

Desiree' opened the bathroom door slowly and peeked her head in. There was nobody in there. Confusion appeared on her face. Didn't she see a little girl walk in here?

A smile popped on her face. She's probably hiding in the shower, she thought to herself.

Slowly and deliberatly, she walked over to the shower, and not so slowly, peeled the shower curtain back. Still nobody in here. But that didn't stop her. She could be hiding in the shower closet. With that in mind, she walked over to the shower closet and opened the door.

Desiree' screamed out in terror! "Kill it, kill it, KILL IT!" The mouse jumped out of the closet, ran out of the bathroom, and into the bedroom. Quick as a wink, she grabbed the broom in the closet and started running to kill the little squirt.

She ran into the room and stopped short. There was the most angelic little girl that you would ever hope to see standing there. She had little blonde ringlets cascading around her face. She looked to be around 4 or 5 years old. The little girl had a cute blue and white dress on, with ruby flats. A genuine Dorothy from Oz look, she thought to herself happily. She almost looked like Shirly Temple.

She knelt down in front of the girl and smiled. "Now where did you come from?" she asked smiling.

The little girl just stood there, as if seeing Desiree', but not really seeing.

The door from the hallway opened. It was Laneigh, from the dorm room next door. "Hi Desiree'," she said worriedly. "Me and Shae heard you scream, and I came over to see if you were alright."

"I'm fine," she replied smiling. "It was just a mouse that scared the crap out of me, but other than that, I'm ok."

"Thats good," Laneigh replied. "Well, I guess I'll see you at breakfast tomorrow."

"OK, hey listen, have you ever seen this little girl right here before? I've haven't seen her around campus, so I figured she was a sister to somebody, and got left here."

Laneigh looked at her confused. "Des, what little girl?"

"This one right. . .here." Desiree' looked a little confused. The little girl had disappeared.

"I think you need some sleep," Laneigh said shaking her head. "See you in the morning."

"Yeah, see ya," Desiree' said shakily. The little girl had been there just a second ago!

Two and a half hours later, after all her class work was completed, Desiree' snuggled into her blue and green plaid comforter. After getting showered, putting her favorite PJ's on, and brushing her teeth, she felt fresh and clean for a new day.

She closed her eyes and thought of home. Then she felt someones eyes on her.

Desiree' opened her eyes, and there standing at the foot of the bed was the little girl. "You sure do like to pop up at the darndest hours," she muttered under her breath.

She got out of bed and walked towards the little girl. "Want to start by telling me your name?" she asked. The little girl just stared at Desiree', almost seeming to be studying her.

Desiree' bent over to touch the little girl's face. Her cheek was icy to the touch. And her eyes, there was something about her deep, blue eyes. They looked so sad.

The little girl looked over Desiree', and let out a silent scream. A red line ran across her neck, and blood started to trickle out.

And, as Desiree' looked on in terror, the little girl faded into thin air, and vanished.

The next day, Desiree' took everything she saw last night as a nightmare. But just to be sure, she headed over to the library to see if anyone had ever been murdered on campus. She was really shook up after that, but she hoped she was wrong, that it was a really bad nightmare.

After the kindly old librarian showed her where the newspaper relics were, she thanked her and started to work.

Desiree' was just about to give up, when the article caught her eye:

"Unsolved murder still baffles FBI and faculty at FSU"

"According to officials, a four-year-old Kila Warren was found dead in her older sister's sleeping quarters. Kila, and her mother, Diane, were to stay the weekend with daughter and sister, Kimberly Warren, a Junior student at FSU.

Kimberly and Diane were touring campus when a disturbance across the lawn alerted school officials. Apparently, someone(whose name will not be mentioned in this article) was walking to her room, when the cries of a young girl were heard coming from Kimberly's room.

When school officials entered the room, they found Kila lying upon the floor, her throat slit opened. Strangly enough, no fingerprints, or any sample of DNA were found"

Desiree' scrolled down, and saw a picture of a face so familiar, it sent chills down her spine. It was the little girl. There was that same look in her mysterious eyes, that look that made her seem so sad. "If only you would speak to me, and tell me who did this to you," she whispered under her breath, trying hard not to cry.

"Hey, Ray!" someone said right behind her. She turned around and smiled. "Hey Jarris, hows it going?"

"Fine," he said smoothly. "Watchya reading?" She rolled her eyes, the tears no longer there. "Nothing" she replied coolly. "I was getting ready to leave anyways."

"Hey, about I walk you to your dorm," he said mildly.

She agreed, so they started out.

As they neared the dormitory, the little girl appeared out of nowhere. Desiree' looked on in suprise as Jarris looked down and sneered "Back from the afterlife, little girl?"

The little girl looked up with somewhat of a smile on her face.

"It's almost time," the little girl told Desiree' in a small, girl-like voice.

Jarris tried to lash out at the little girl, but he might as well of been hitting at the wind. His hand went through her like air.

She looked at Desiree' again and smiled. "Its almost time," she said again.

Jarris looked at Desiree' with a look of total hatred. With what seemed like a totally different person, he grabbed her by the wrist and started yanking her behind the building.

"Jarris, what are you doing?!?!" she cried hysterically.

"What I've been planning on doing since I saw you registration day," he said calmly, too calmly.

With that in mind, he ripped at her clothes, took out his hunting knife, and slit her throat.

"Freshmen female found dead behind girls' dormitory at FSU"

"Nineteen-year-old Desiree' De Lante was found dead behind the girls' dormitory at 2:30 pm yesterday afternoon. No fingerprints or any articles of DNA were found. She was clutching a hunting knife. Faculty speculate suicide."
