THE O. ZONE
Welcome to Octaviano’s Studio of Gymnastics! Our studio was established in 1973, providing quality gymnastics training for over thirty-three years in the Kendall area. We are proud to be a United States Gymnastics Federation Safety Certified gym. With a full roster of excellent and experienced coaches and classes full of energetic young gymnasts, we are looking forward to another great year.
For many children attending classes at Octaviano’s, the goal is to eventually become part of the competitive team program. At this level, they will compete against other teams throughout the state, region, and even nation! They will be mastering skills they never dreamed of, and winning ribbons and medals.
Other children will continue on in gymnastics for its recreational value, perhaps using the skills in cheer leading or in other sports or just having a good time keeping physically fit and active.
Whatever their goal, the many gymnasts that we have had the privilege to work with through the years, have found Octaviano’s a place that nurtures their sense of pride in their own accomplishments.
We look forward to a year of growth for each and every one of our students as they increase in gymnastics skills and self-confidence. Please feel free to talk to your child’s coach if you have any particular concerns or questions. Our entire coaching staff is dedicated to making sure that your child has a good year at Octaviano’s.
THANK YOU
The Staff at Octaviano’s gymnastics would like to thank you for giving us the opportunity to work with your child. We gain so much personally, through watching each child grow as individuals as well as gymnasts. Their imaginations and perspectives are gold mines for both humor and truth. Their minds are ready and willing to “soak in” everything around them. As gymnastics instructors, we are interested in teaching them gymnastics skills, coordination and comfort in movement. It is our job to provide them a safe, fun and loving environment in which to learn. It is our responsibility to treat them with respect and as individuals, meeting their individual needs. It is also our job to give each child success. Thank you for allowing us to work with your child throughout the year. We find it very rewarding.
BACK TO BASICS
Come September, it may seem like your young gymnast has moved backwards and that the class is going over skills your child mastered months ago. It’s true!
Each Autumn, we spend the first few weeks going over basic skills and safety rules in every class, regardless of the level. Many children have not participated in gymnastics over the summer, and muscles and memories are in need of tuning up.
Several weeks of review will help ensure the children’s safety.
We’ll also be checking skill levels to be sure that your child has been placed in an appropriate class and will make any necessary changes at the end of the review period.
SAFETY FIRST
Safety is where we start at Octaviano’s. It’s our first and foremost concern in working with all of our young athletes. As a USAG safety-certified gym, we know what’s needed to avoid accidents and we do it.
Safety in gymnastics involves three areas: equipment, teaching method, and the relationship between coach and gymnast.
The equipment at our studio is checked regularly, according to USAG standards, to make sure that it is in perfect condition. We also pay close attention to the matting to provide the proper amount for an activity, depending on the child’s skill level.
Progression of skills is another key to safe gymnastics. Gymnastics is not simply a set of tricks, but is based on developing a series of skills in a safe order. Each skill is broken down into small pieces, according to USAG guidelines, in a framework for progression; lesson plans are reviewed and modified as needed to attend to safety concerns. Children master the basics properly before being taught the next step. For instance, they learn to tuck their heads properly before learning a forward roll; and, for example, skills are learned and practiced on the floor before they are attempted on the beam.
The sport of gymnastics is mentally tough as well as physically demanding. Children are helped to work through their fears by mastering one small skill at a time until they are confident and able to perform the skill properly, doing it safely as well as gracefully. Building a relationship of trust with the coach is vital to this process. Our coaches are always vigilant. They hand spot, verbally spot, and make sure the child is both mentally and physically prepared for any given activity
Safety first is the cornerstone to good gymnastics at Octaviano’s.

PARENT’S CORNER
Bringing a friend to class? Great! But please call ahead to schedule the visit. An Octaviano’s registration/consent card needs to be signed by parent/guardian in order to participate. Parents are a vital part of making a child’s gymnastics experience successful. Make sure your child is eating right - especially when they come before gym – snacks (low sugar please).
Encourage your child – particularly when a new skill is proving difficult to accomplish.
Talk with our coaches, if there is a problem, question, or information that would be helpful to us in working with your child.
2007-2008 SEASON
Our classes begin on Mon., Aug. 20, and will continue throughout almost every day of the school year. The gym is always open on teacher workdays. Major holidays on which the gym will be closed will be posted on the bulletin board.
In addition to regular scheduled classes, gymnastics day camp is available during Winter break, Spring recess, and during the Summer, for children ages 5-15. More information on the camp programs will be sent home at a later date.
The Sunrays Teams
Fun With Competition
Octaviano’s Gymnastics’ offers competitive teams for boys and girls participation in our program. When a child masters the required skills needed for the competition level, they can join our team program*.
Octaviano’s had a great competitive season. We had boys and girls going to State, Regional, and National Meets, winning many individual and team awards.
The Coaches are very proud of their teams. They have seen a lot of improvement in skills, and real dedication to move ahead on the competitive level. Their gymnasts were full of energy, commitment, and talent throughout the entire season.
*Required skills are taught in our regular one-hour gymnastics classes.
All levels of classes offer big-time benefits for children at Octaviano’s. Gymnastics helps build skills and improve athletic ability for other sports. It develops eye hand coordination and motor skills. It helps children with their strength and flexibility and increases their kinesthetic awareness (moving their body through space and knowing where they are relative to their surroundings).
Some of the benefits go beyond conditioned bodies, building character and self-confidence. Children love to show off their cartwheels and flips on the playground. They are proud of their accomplishments. They also become good at managing their time, getting their homework done and accepting their responsibilities.
OUR SUMMER SHCEDULE WILL BEGIN THURSDAY, MAY 31, 2007. We encourage your child to attend as much as possible so that skills are not forgotten.
Classes will be pro-rated for summer vacation. Call or see Rudy or Elia to enroll.
