Chapter One
Peeking In At Dementia

The sight of Barbara Winters was quite unfamiliar to her average, weekly observations and perchases of various items at the grocery store than this weeks. She was in quite a hurry and had a worried look on her face.

Mom, what's the rush?" Barbara's twenty-one year old son Garrett asked. "I didn't bother tossing a week away from summer vacation, spending it with you just to watch paranoia take you over. I could be with my friends right now, around College grounds. Besides, Dad knows how to cook, if not at least turn off the stove off as the ding of a timer instructs him."

Barbara ignored him as she rushed down the aisle of the final item to check off of her list.

"Dog food... dog food..." Barbara mumbled, skimming the shelves for a medium-sized bag of dog food. "Dog food." She sighed, finding what she had hoped to and hugging it in delight. She rushed to the cash registers.

"Have you tasted Dad's cooking, Mom? It's good, what are you worried about?" Barbara's fifteen-year old boy Daniel asked.

Anne, of fourteen, was the only one not to question her mother. Of course, she was on the phone the whole time. She was quite different from her brothers as well. While Daniel was rebellious, the average messy haired teenager and Garrett the wise and laid back College student, Anne's expensively clothed, social self was a sore thumb in the hand of the family. The children always came with their mother to the grocery store with her because of their differences in diet.

"Your father burns what he cooks and I won't have that this time." Barbara said, handing her items to the nearest cashier she could find. The cashier finished quickly, and as Barbara paid the cashier, she motioned for them to keep the change.

"Let's hurry home, before Dad burns down the house!" Anne warned as they left the store. It was as if she and their mother had ignored Garrett and Daniel's optimistic views.

Garrett and Daniel sighed in unison. As they walked out of the store, a stand they were completely oblivious to upon entrance of the store caught Daniel's eye. He ran over, calling the rest of them over as well.

"Oh, neat, look at all of this stuff!" Garrett said, examining the items on shelf.

There was pottery, old weapons, things you'd find in a museum. However, Daniel picked up and eyed a bow, which had been connected to a case of arrows. The price shocked him. Only ten dollars. He jumped excitedly and paid the mysterious man behind the counter every cent.

The family rushed to their car and got home quickly. Their mother was the first to get inside the house.

"GARY!" Barbara yelled, in fear their house was burning down from the inside-out. The rest of the family followed.

Barbara was in shock when she got inside. Everyones plate was different, but it all looked delicious. Daniel ran down the hall, outside and placed the bow and arrows in the yard. He watched them in admiration for a moment, then ran back into the house.

"This is.. amazing, Gary.." Barbara said to her husband, watching interestedly in the dinners.

Daniel finished quickly, as did Garrett. They both ran out to the backyard. Anne took her time eating, but ran outside as well when she finished.

"Be careful with that, Danny!"
